SUMMARY:The Power of Mind: Kindness\, Clarity & Insight
DESCRIPTION:This brand new weekly course presents the Mahayana Seven Points of Mind Training. These points lay out a path of formal meditation practice\, along with guidelines for extending that practice into everyday life. \nThese teachings are precious and unique in presenting the entire depth and breadth of the Buddha’s Mahayana teachings succinctly and practically. Mahayana mind training offers an approach to life that is straightforward\, grounded in sanity\, kindness\, and compassion. Yet it also offers a vision that completely transcends our ordinary way of viewing ourselves and others\, with an all-encompassing vision of enlightenment. \nAt the heart of this vision of enlightenment is the view that our innate\, fundamental identity is vast\, luminous and utterly awake. The Mahayana teachings refer to this as our enlightened heart\, or bodhicitta. Enlightenment is nothing other than who we really are. But for most of us\, our true nature is like a hidden treasure\, concealed behind layers of mental activity and preoccupation. \nMahayana mind training helps us give expression to our enlightened heart in everything we think\, say and do. The training particularly focuses on our relationships\, which are like a mirror that shows us exactly where we are at. Our relationships also provide us with a way to dissolve the limitations that prevent the vastness of our true nature from fully manifesting. \nFounded on a practice lineage that has been actively practised for hundreds of years\, these teachings are completely relevant to the challenges posed by our modern\, globalised life. This course will include topics like: \n\nfinding meaning in our lives\, and connectedness with our world\novercoming loneliness and isolation\nhow to thrive in the face of difficulties\nhow to contribute to creating a more sustainable\, kind\, and compassionate world\n\nThe course will consist of seven classes on Wednesday evenings\, plus two extended practice based classes where we gather for more in-depth mind training meditation practice. \n🗓️ 7 weekly classes: 25 September – 13 November 2024 (course break on Wednesday 9 October)\n⏰ 7:00-8:45pm AEST (Start time 11:00am CEST\, 5:00am US East Coast)\n* as this will be taught from Brisbane\, times in other locations will change once summer time begins in some states in the second week of October. Please use this time zone calculator for full details \nPractice days on Saturday 19 October and Sunday 10 November\, 9:30am to 3:30pm AEST (Start time 10:30 AEDT\, 1:30am CEST\, 7:30pm US East Coast) \n📍Online via Zoom and in person at Rigpa Brisbane\, 2/19 Enoggera Tce\, Red Hill. \n💰full $200\, concession $100\, free for Rigpa paying subscribers (registration is still required\, just close the payment page that comes up after registration.)

SUMMARY:Inspring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind | The Spiritual Path
DESCRIPTION:The first declaration that the Buddha made at the time of his enlightenment was: “Profound peace\, free of complexity\, natural simplicity\, uncompounded luminosity.” This module of Inspiring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind examines what enlightenment is and explores the practical training of the Tibetan Buddhist Dzogchen Path in terms of View\, Meditation and Action. To see directly the absolute state\, the Ground of our being\, is the View; the way of stabilizing that View and making it an unbroken experience is Meditation; and integrating the View into our entire reality\, and life\, is what is meant by Action.

SUMMARY:How Sad is Your Love
DESCRIPTION:How does it change us to reflect on suffering and impermanence\, and on the ways we create our own pain? The point is that it shows us that we can turn our life around by finding a new direction that is spiritual rather than mundane. And when we set out on the path in that new direction\, we carry within us a vivid understanding of how entrenched suffering is\, and a warm love for all those who are floundering.

SUMMARY:Free Your Mind with Love
DESCRIPTION:The Buddhist practice of ‘equalizing self and others’ as expressed in giving with great love and taking with great compassion\, known as tonglen\, is one of the most useful and powerful of all Buddhist practices. Tonglen is a simple and straightforward practice\, which is extremely effective at getting to the heart of our predicament: our excessively self-centred attitude. Tonglen opens you to the truth of the suffering of others; it helps you to reveal the loving\, expansive radiance of your own nature. And it offers extraordinary power in destroying the self-cherishing and self-absorption which is the root of all our hard-heartedness and all our suffering. \nHeld over five Tuesday evenings from 7 – 9pm\, from 27 August to 24 September\, 2024.\nMelbourne: 803 Nicholson St\, Carlton North\nSydney: 158 Australia St\, Newtown\nOnline via Zoom \nNote – this course is also known as Module 3B of the Wisdom of Compassion full year course. New students are welcome to join this module \nLed by western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg;\nMeditation practice;\nTime for contemplation;\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering each student the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment and to connect with a community of practitioners.\n\nFREE for Rigpa members/subscribers using a discount code. SUMMARY:Liberation: Is it possible in this life?
DESCRIPTION:No matter who we are\, we all share the same wish to be happy and free from suffering. But when we are immersed in the responsibilities of this life and in all our frenetic daily activity\, it may seem impossible to achieve liberation\, that is only for special beings. But nothing could be further from the truth: when we realize the suffering caused by our way of living in samsara\, a desire arises within us to be free from it\, and the practice of the dharma offers us the possibility of liberation in this life. \n\nThis session is part of our Monthly Sangha Gathering series presenting highlights from: The Way of the Great Perfection \, a new cycle of the All-Encompassing Path to Enlightenment

SUMMARY:Sorting out what karma really is - a teaching by Philippe Cornu
DESCRIPTION:We often have misleading ideas about what karma is. We confuse it with a destiny to which we are bound and cannot change. In fact\, when we really understand what karma is\, it gives us greater freedom and hope on our spiritual path.

SUMMARY:Loneliness: The Solution Within
DESCRIPTION:All of us\, at some stage of our life\, experience loneliness one way or another. Loneliness does not discriminate\, people across all genders and ages experience it — both wealthy and poor. So often in seeking for an answer to this we look for comfort outside of ourselves – we endlessly distract ourselves away from the core of our problems. The Buddhist teachings take a different approach. They remind us that ultimately the solution lies within ourselves. Through working with our mind and heart\, loneliness can be softened\, transformed and ultimately completely overcome. \nSaturday’s Loneliness: The Solution Within session is part of our monthly program: Finding Peace and Joy in Troubled Times. This series of Saturday afternoon sessions offer an introduction to meditation and practical advice from some of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist teachers of our age. \nApplying these teachings can help us meet the challenges of these difficult times\, to heal ourselves\, and to bring us to the core of our own peace\, compassion and wisdom.

SUMMARY:How We Can Work with Anger
DESCRIPTION:Harming others out of anger brings suffering\, both to ourselves and others. Yet\, so often\, we don’t think of the consequences and instead find ourselves provoked and reacting impulsively\, only to regret it later. On the other hand\, if we just try to block or suppress anger when it arises\, it is very difficult to manage. So what can we do to deal with anger when it arises\, as it inevitably will? \nThe Buddhist teachings offer a rich toolkit to help us short circuit\, pacify\, and transform our anger. Join us for an afternoon investigating how we can apply those tools each and every day. \nSaturday’s Why Do We Suffer? session is part of our monthly program: Finding Peace and Joy in Troubled Times.
