SUMMARY:Loneliness: The Solution Within
DESCRIPTION:All of us\, at some stage of our life\, experience loneliness one way or another. Loneliness does not discriminate\, people across all genders and ages experience it — both wealthy and poor. So often in seeking for an answer to this we look for comfort outside of ourselves – we endlessly distract ourselves away from the core of our problems. The Buddhist teachings take a different approach. They remind us that ultimately the solution lies within ourselves. Through working with our mind and heart\, loneliness can be softened\, transformed and ultimately completely overcome. \nSaturday’s Loneliness: The Solution Within session is part of our monthly program: Finding Peace and Joy in Troubled Times. This series of Saturday afternoon sessions offer an introduction to meditation and practical advice from some of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist teachers of our age. \nApplying these teachings can help us meet the challenges of these difficult times\, to heal ourselves\, and to bring us to the core of our own peace\, compassion and wisdom.

SUMMARY:Monthly Sangha Gathering: The Way of the Great Perfection
DESCRIPTION:On 7 July we will present: Sorting out what karma really is – a teaching by Philippe Cornu \nWe often have misleading ideas about what karma is. We confuse it with a destiny to which we are bound and cannot change. In fact\, when we really understand what karma is\, it gives us greater freedom and hope on our spiritual path. \nThis session is part of our Monthly Sangha Gathering series presenting highlights from: The Way of the Great Perfection \, a new cycle of the All-Encompassing Path to Enlightenment \nThe ground is our buddha nature\, \nThe support is this precious human life\, \nThe wonderful circumstance is meeting a spiritual teacher\, and \nThe method is the pith instructions through which we can realise our true nature\, the buddha. \nGampopa\, The Jewel Ornament of Liberation \nThe All-Encompassing Path to Enlightenment is the main study programme in Rigpa\, for students of all levels: new\, more advanced or in-between. In this cycle\, The Way of the Great Perfection\, we will explore the main principles of the preliminary practices in a fresh way. These practices are a complete path in themselves and also the foundation for Vajrayana and Dzogchen practice. \nThe preliminary practices\, called Ngöndro in Tibetan\, encompasses all the elements needed to prepare us to fully receive the Great Perfection teachings of Dzogchen\, the highest and most direct stream of wisdom within the Buddhist tradition of Tibet. \nSo no matter where we are on our path\, this new cycle will support us in taking it to completion. Our senior and most experienced Rigpa teachers will guide us through the key principles of the Ngöndro\, helping us to discover or revisit these principles in a fresh\, up-to-date\, real life way\, while preserving their authenticity. \nEach session will offer guided contemplations\, group meditations\, exercises and discussions. \nThe goal of this multi-year programme of The Way of the Great Perfection is for us to arrive at a thorough and complete understanding of what the teachings tell us about the different methods of Buddhist practice\, to reach a complete certainty on how we apply them in daily life\, and ultimately realise the innermost nature of our own minds. \nWe warmly invite you to attend in person at our National Center in Newtown. If this is really not possible for you\, you may join online by Zoom. \nHeld on one Sunday each Month\, 9.30am – 1.00pm \nNext session on 7 July\, 4 August\, 1 September\, 27 October\, 3 November\, 1 December \nCost: Adult: $20\, Concession $10\, Rigpa Subscribers (members): free \n(Subscribers\, if you have not received a discount code\, please email sydney@rigpa.org.au.)

SUMMARY:Turning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment/Term 3/Online
DESCRIPTION:The Buddhist teachings show us a way to find a deep sense of fulfillment that does not depend on outer circumstances and is naturally ours. Through a process of reflection and meditation\, we find inner strength\, which allows us to fully and fearlessly engage with everything we experience in our lives. Then\, all our experiences – happy or sad\, good or bad – will become a source of personal growth and spiritual awakening: they have the potential to open our eyes and our heart\, and make us grow wiser and more compassionate. \nTurning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment will present teachings that offer commentary of the classic\, short and pithy text\, Taking Happiness and Suffering on our Path\, by the great Dzogchen master Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima. This text presents the Buddha’s teachings on how to transform suffering and happiness in a manner that is easy to understand and put into practice. \nDetails for Term 3 \nWhere: Online \nWhen: Friday mornings\, eight sessions\, 26 July to 27 September with a break from  16th August to Friday 23rd August \nTime: 9.30am – 11:30 am\, Australian Eastern Time \n(Thursday 11.30pm Central European Time; Thursday 5.30pm US East Coast Time) \nThis is the third term of a year-long course. SUMMARY:Liberation: Is it possible in this life?
DESCRIPTION:No matter who we are\, we all share the same wish to be happy and free from suffering. But when we are immersed in the responsibilities of this life and in all our frenetic daily activity\, it may seem impossible to achieve liberation\, that is only for special beings. SUMMARY:August Monthly Sangha Gathering: The Way of the Great Perfection
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 4 August\, 9.30am-1.00pm\nIn Person at the Sydney Centre (158 Australia Street\, Newtown) & Online \nIn August we will present: Liberation: Is it possible in this life? – a teaching by Alain Beauregard \nNo matter who we are\, we all share the same wish to be happy and free from suffering. But when we are immersed in the responsibilities of this life and in all our frenetic daily activity\, it may seem impossible to achieve liberation\, that is only for special beings. But nothing could be further from the truth: when we realize the suffering caused by our way of living in samsara\, a desire arises within us to be free from it\, and the practice of the dharma offers us the possibility of liberation in this life. \nThis session is part of our Monthly Sangha Gathering series presenting highlights from: The Way of the Great Perfection \, a new cycle of the All-Encompassing Path to Enlightenment. \nThe ground is our buddha nature\, \nThe support is this precious human life\, \nThe wonderful circumstance is meeting a spiritual teacher\, and \nThe method is the pith instructions through which we can realise our true nature\, the buddha. \nWe warmly invite you to attend in person at our National Centre in Newtown but if this is really not possible for you\, you may join online by Zoom. \nHeld on one Sunday each Month\, 9.30am – 1.00pm \nNext sessions on 4 August\, 1 September\, 27 October\, 3 November\, 1 December \nCost: Adult: $20\, Concession $10\, Rigpa Subscribers (members): free \n(Subscribers\, if you have not received a discount code\, please email sydney@rigpa.org.au.) \nPlease Note: Sangha members who wish to engage in this All Encompassing Path Program: The Way of the Great Perfection more fully please email us at newcastle@rigpa.org.au. \nLapsed sangha members who wish to reengage with sangha studies can also contact us at the above Newcastle Rigpa email address.

SUMMARY:How We Live is How We Die | Rigpa Sydney Book Group
DESCRIPTION:As much as we might try to resist\, endings happen in every moment—the end of a breath\, the end of a day\, the end of a relationship\, and ultimately the end of life. And accompanying each ending is a beginning\, though it may be unclear what the beginning holds. In How We Live Is How We Die\, Pema Chödrön shares her wisdom for working with this flow of life—learning to live with ease\, joy\, and compassion through uncertainty\, embracing new beginnings\, and ultimately preparing for death with curiosity and openness rather than fear. 💖 \nRigpa Sydney’s book group meets on the third Tuesday of each month.  \nEveryone Welcome \n⏰10:30am – 12.30pm AEST\n📍in person at Rigpa Sydney

SUMMARY:Free Your Mind with Love
DESCRIPTION:The Buddhist practice of ‘equalizing self and others’ as expressed in giving with great love and taking with great compassion\, known as tonglen\, is one of the most useful and powerful of all Buddhist practices. Tonglen is a simple and straightforward practice\, which is extremely effective at getting to the heart of our predicament: our excessively self-centred attitude. Tonglen opens you to the truth of the suffering of others; it helps you to reveal the loving\, expansive radiance of your own nature. And it offers extraordinary power in destroying the self-cherishing and self-absorption which is the root of all our hard-heartedness and all our suffering. \nHeld over five Tuesday evenings from 7 – 9pm\, from 27 August to 24 September\, 2024.\nMelbourne: 803 Nicholson St\, Carlton North\nSydney: 158 Australia St\, Newtown\nOnline via Zoom \nNote – this course is also known as Module 3B of the Wisdom of Compassion full year course. New students are welcome to join this module \nLed by western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg;\nMeditation practice;\nTime for contemplation;\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering each student the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment and to connect with a community of practitioners.\n\nFREE for Rigpa members/subscribers using a discount code. SUMMARY:Inspring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind | The Spiritual Path
DESCRIPTION:The first declaration that the Buddha made at the time of his enlightenment was: “Profound peace\, free of complexity\, natural simplicity\, uncompounded luminosity.” This module of Inspiring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind examines what enlightenment is and explores the practical training of the Tibetan Buddhist Dzogchen Path in terms of View\, Meditation and Action. To see directly the absolute state\, the Ground of our being\, is the View; the way of stabilizing that View and making it an unbroken experience is Meditation; and integrating the View into our entire reality\, and life\, is what is meant by Action.

SUMMARY:The Power of Mind: Kindness\, Clarity & Insight
DESCRIPTION:This brand new weekly course presents the Mahayana Seven Points of Mind Training. These points lay out a path of formal meditation practice\, along with guidelines for extending that practice into everyday life. \nThese teachings are precious and unique in presenting the entire depth and breadth of the Buddha’s Mahayana teachings succinctly and practically. Mahayana mind training offers an approach to life that is straightforward\, grounded in sanity\, kindness\, and compassion. Yet it also offers a vision that completely transcends our ordinary way of viewing ourselves and others\, with an all-encompassing vision of enlightenment. \nAt the heart of this vision of enlightenment is the view that our innate\, fundamental identity is vast\, luminous and utterly awake. The Mahayana teachings refer to this as our enlightened heart\, or bodhicitta. Enlightenment is nothing other than who we really are. But for most of us\, our true nature is like a hidden treasure\, concealed behind layers of mental activity and preoccupation. \nMahayana mind training helps us give expression to our enlightened heart in everything we think\, say and do. The training particularly focuses on our relationships\, which are like a mirror that shows us exactly where we are at.
