SUMMARY:Sydney Book Group
DESCRIPTION:Sydney Book Group \nWe warmly invite you to our monthly book group. We will be meeting on the third Tuesday of each month\, 10.30am – 12.30pm\, starting 15 August. Please join us upstairs at 158 Australia St\, Newtown. \nThis book group will be exploring end-of-life themes\, as presented in Tibetan Buddhism. \nOur first book will be Facing Death and Finding Hope by Christine Longaker. \nMany books have been written on the subject of death and dying over the last twenty-five years\, yet none provides a comprehensive spiritual paradigm combined with practical guidance for resounding effectively and compassionately to be most common difficulties and challenges of the dying. Christine’s Longaker’s uncompromising and uplifting book does it all\, and is based on her own personal experiences\, her study and work with Sogyal Rinpoche and on the workshops she now holds all over Europe and the USA. \n“Life’s final phase is too important to be left to chance.  Wise guides are arising in our culture who can teach us about this crowning event. Christine Longaker brings deep wisdom to this task\, and her views span all religious traditions.  This is a fine\, gentle\, and deeply compassionate work.  Highly recommended.” \n— Dr. Larry Dossey\, author of Prayer is Good Medicine \nEach session will include: \n\nmeditation practice\ntime to check-in with each other\nan overview of our selected reading\nopen discussion and information sharing\n\nPlease email Rigpa Sydney sydney@rigpa.org.au to let us know if you’re coming.

SUMMARY:The Wisdom of Compassion: Inner Healing and Spiritual Strength | Melbourne\, Sydney and Online
DESCRIPTION:The Wisdom of Compassion presents key Buddhist teachings on the powerful logic of compassion and practical methods for developing a more kind relationship with ourselves\, those around us and ultimately all beings.  \nOur innate capacity for empathy is the source of the very best of human qualities: love\, kindness\, generosity\, warm-heartedness\, courage … compassion. Although we are born with a vast capacity to love\, we may not know how to do so unconditionally\, or how to express that love in practice. \nWhen our heart and mind are filled with love\, we find the greatest inner healing\, tranquillity and well-being. Modern research shows that with empathy and compassion we can be more fully ourselves\, connect more easily with others\, improve self worth and reduce self-criticism\, and lead healthier lives. \nParticipants in this course will learn how to: \n\ndevelop loving kindness for themselves\nextend that loving kindness to all beings\nmove along the path from compassion to fully enlightened courage\n\nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering each student the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment and to connect with a community of practitioners.

SUMMARY:Our Inner Freedom: Looking Within | Melbourne\, Sydney and Online
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha’s life and teachings show that we all encounter change and loss. Our lives are changing all the time\, often in  small ways\, but sometimes impermanence turns our whole world upside down. Sometimes\, the experience of such a powerful reminder of impermanence can be frightening;  and we feel an urgent need to question and challenge our life’s priorities. he deeper implications of impermanence—that everything is interdependent and selfless—can help us to let go of grasping and fixating on our circumstances as solid and real. As we deepen our reflection\, we may well emerge from self-destructive habits that may be causing us to be unhappy or dissatisfied. If we can take the message of impermanence and death to heart fully we can discover the deathless nature of mind that is the doorway to genuine and lasting freedom. \nThis year-long course consists of three modules. The first will present a series of contemplations and meditations on impermanence\, death\, selflessness and emptiness. This can assist us to move beyond  the clutches of fear and discover a new meaning\, a new inspiration\, and a new joy in our lives. The second\, looks at how the Buddha’s own life embodies the deep truths he taught. And the third\, takes a deep dive into the elements of the Buddha’s teaching that distinguish Buddhism from all other religious and philosophical approaches. \nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Patrick Gaffney\, Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering each student the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment.

SUMMARY:Turning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment | Online
DESCRIPTION:The Buddhist teachings show us a way to find a deep sense of fulfillment that does not depend on outer circumstances and is naturally ours. Through a process of reflection and meditation\, we find inner strength\, which allows us to fully and fearlessly engage with everything we experience in our lives. Then\, all our experiences – happy or sad\, good or bad – will become a source of personal growth and spiritual awakening: they have the potential to open our eyes and our heart\, and make us grow wiser and more compassionate. \nTurning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment will present teachings that offer commentary of the classic\, short and pithy text\, Taking Happiness and Suffering on our Path\, by the great Dzogchen master Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima. This text presents the Buddha’s teachings on how to transform suffering and happiness in a manner that is easy to understand and put into practice.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Compassion: A Practical Guide to Being Kind | Online
DESCRIPTION:In a world full of turmoil\, stress\, anxiety and disconnect\, we are all looking for simple\, practical ways in which we can nurture our own inner goodness and find the peace and courage to live well. \nGeshe Chekawa’s summation of the Tibetan Buddhist guidelines for living a compassionate life\, known as the Seven Points of Mind Training\, have guided practitioners for more than a thousand years. His pithy slogans open the way for each of us to nurture our own compassionate nature and put compassion into action in everyday life. These slogans offer a vital practical antidote to despair and despondency. \nCultivating Compassion presents teachings on the Seven Points given by Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche accompanied by reflections from Traleg Rinpoche. \nJetsün Khandro Rinpoche is one of the outstanding meditation teachers of our time. She is known for her penetrating wisdom and humour\, conveying the Buddhist teachings in a concise and lively manner\, enriched with personal anecdotes\, which are of particular relevance to the everyday life of the modern\, fast-paced world. \nFrom the early 1980s onwards\, Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche was a pioneer in bringing Tibetan Buddhism to Australia and was a strong advocate of non-sectarianism. He taught extensively on many aspects of Buddhist psychology and philosophy\, comparative religion\, and Buddhist and Western thought. \nThis program is open to all\, but does assume some familiarity with meditation and the Buddhist understanding of interdependence.

SUMMARY:Meditation and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Meditation & Beyond – An Urban Weekend Meditation Retreat with Dr Ian Gawler\n  \n\n\n\nJoin Rigpa Teacher\, Ian Gawler for two days of highly experiential teachings. Together\, we will explore two wonderful approaches… The Unifying Practice and Open Awareness meditation. \nWhether you are new to meditation\, or an old hand\, this weekend will guide you to a deeper\, more satisfying meditation experience. \nThe weekend will include plenty of time for discussion\, questions and answers\, and meditation practice. \nOnline or in person in Melbourne\, Sydney\, Newcastle \nA weekend for retreat\, a weekend for your self.\n\n\n\nSATURDAY – THE UNIFYING PRACTICE\n\n\nSUNDAY – AWARENESS MEDITATION\n\n\n\nAnyone who has begun meditating knows the mind is tricky. As we get to know it more\, we come to realise that rather than us using it as the wonderful tool that it is\, it often tends to use us! \nSo to tame this mind of ours\, to bring it under control\, to be able to use it to its best\, we need to train it. \nThis is the role of meditation. \nThe Unifying Practice is a unique combination of three core meditation techniques that are first learnt individually then brought together. A special technique developed by Sogyal Rinpoche\, it is simple to learn and has direct application for many needs – wellbeing\, stress management\, study\, work\, sport\, health and healing\, as well as providing a mainstay on the path to enlightenment. \nIan will introduce the theory\, share the techniques\, guide the practices. \n\n\n\n\nThe Unifying Practice is actually the ground of all practice\, and can be applied at all levels\, meditation\, ngöndro\, sadhana practice and dzogchen. Through this practice\, our ordinary body\, speech and mind are transformed into the enlightened body\, speech and mind of the Buddhas. As we practise the sequence of the three methods\, slowly our thoughts\, emotions and energy get transformed and meditation happens effortlessly. So\, through simply practicing the Unifying Practice\, we can gradually reach the innermost nature of mind. \n\n\n\n\n Sogyal Rinpoche \n\n\n\n\n\nPure awareness: “knowing”\, “clarity”\, or “luminosity”\, is one of three fundamental qualities of our mind\, along with love and wisdom. Awareness illuminates all we perceive and indeed\, it illuminates our own true nature. \nWhen in pure awareness\, we are fully in the present moment. We are able to fully engage with life – joyfully. Experiencing pure awareness is possible for everyone. It is always there. \nWe simply need to learn how to recognise it\, and then remain in it. \nWhile most meditation techniques focus upon a particular object\, Awareness Meditation is special; \n\nit is object-less. Also known as Shamatha Without Support\, this is almost like non-meditation;\nit takes us beyond technique to a more direct experience of who we really are.\n\nAwareness Meditation takes us to the very heart of meditation… \nAnd what we experience in our formal practice will translate directly into enhancing our everyday life. \nBased on profound teachings by Sogyal Rinpoche\, and building on the practices of the retreat’s first day\, Ian will share practice tips\, guide practice sessions and answer questions. \n\n\n\n\nWhen we try to control the mind or hold on to an experience\,\nWe do not see the innate perfection of the present moment.\nPure awareness is like space\, boundless and open.\nIt is always here.\nYou do not have to make it up.\nAll you have to do is rest in that. \n\n\n\n\nTulku Urgyen Rinpoche \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr Ian Gawler OAM\nDr Ian Gawler is a retired veterinarian\, long term cancer survivor and best-selling author who has taught widely on meditation for over 40 years. Ian has been a student of Sogyal Rinpoche since 1985 and from 2006 to 2013 trained in the study and practice of authentic Buddhist teachings on meditation\, mind\, compassion and wisdom via Rigpa’s Institute of Wisdom and Compassion. He has also received teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many other teachers from across all traditions. Ian is closely involved with the Inter-Faith movement. \nHis books include the ground-breaking You Can Conquer Cancer and Blue Sky Mind. \n \nHe co-founded the world’s first lifestyle-based self-help programs for both cancer and Multiple Sclerosis and worked at the Gawler Foundation as therapeutic director for nearly 30 years. More recently he has been involved in developing a therapeutic meditation app Allevi8\, and in establishing Centres for Contemplative Studies at the University of Melbourne and Monash University. Dr Gawler holds a Masters in Counselling and In 1987 he received the Order of Australia Medal for his contribution to the community.\n\n\n\nDetails\nThis weekend is open to anyone with an interest in meditation and Tibetan Buddhism \nAlso\, Rigpa Instructors will be in attendance at other Rigpa Centres to facilitate further discussion and Q&A. \nYou can attend with Ian in person at Rigpa’s Melbourne Centre; or Online ZOOM; or Other Centres on Streaming. \nDate:  Saturday\, February 24th @ 10am-5.30pm & Sunday\, February 25th @ 9.30am-5pm (AEDT) \nHow: In Person (& Remote Centre) or Online Zoom \nLocations: Rigpa Melbourne\, Sydney & Newcastle \n\nRigpa Melbourne (Ian Gawler In Person): 108 Nicholson Street\, Carlton North\, Vic 3054.\n\nIn Melbourne\, consider using public transport. SUMMARY:Tuesday Book Group
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss Thomas K. Shor’s book A Step Away from Paradise in the Book Group. \nThis book tells the true story from a far-off corner of the Himalayas\, long fabled in Tibetan tradition to be hiding among its peaks and glaciers a valley of immortality – a real-life Shangri-La. \nThey had been waiting generations for the prophesied lama to come\, the one with the secret visionary knowledge of how to ‘open’ the Hidden Land. \nThen\, one day\, he came. It was the early 1960s. His name was Tulshuk Lingpa. This book tells the story of this charismatic visionary lama and his remarkable expedition. \nJust imagine… What would have happened if Lewis Carroll had proclaimed the reality of Alice’s Wonderland? What if he had gathered a following & launched an expedition? \nIt is a wonderful opportunity to share insights and reflections with like-minded Dharma friends. \nA small plate of food to share and a donation to our Centre is most appreciated. \nAll are welcome. \nPre-booking is not required. \nEnquiries: Contact Liz at brisbane@rigpa.org.au

SUMMARY:Inspiring a Revolution in your Heart and Mind / Term 2 / Newcastle
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we take you an experiential journey through The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Discover a deep and universal wisdom explored in the major themes of the book\, and learn about their practical implications for living well. Suitable for people of any religion or of none\, this course encourages you to reflect on the Buddhist teachings\, to see what makes sense to you and to experiment with applying these teachings in your daily life. \nThe Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is widely regarded as one of the most complete and authoritative presentations of Tibetan Buddhism. A manual for life and death and a source of sacred inspiration from the heart of the Tibetan tradition\, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying provides a lucid and inspiring introduction to the practice of meditation\, to the nature of mind\, to karma and rebirth\, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path. The teachings\, meditation and contemplations from this authentic tradition reveal how each of us can live a more meaningful\, connected and fulfilling life. \nIn term two we explore the power of our mind as the universal ordering principle: it is the creator of suffering and the creator of happiness. We investigate two aspects of the mind: \n\nthe appearance of mind – our thoughts\, emotions\, all the stories\, the ordinary mind and\nthe essence of mind – which is clear\, cognizant and has unconfined capacity.\n\nWe will also look at how to make our meditation practice truly meaningful. This term we will also explore the Buddhist reasoning for the acceptance of rebirth and reincarnation. We will use the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths as a framework to help us take stock of our lives\, inspire a shift in the way we see ourselves and the way we relate to the world around us. Lastly\, we investigate Karma. Karma is often misunderstood as fate or pre-destination. Karma\, however if understood well\, presents us with an opportunity to be free from our suffering. \nOver the course of the year you will learn: \n\nHow an acceptance of impermanence can help us understand death and change our attitude towards life\nHow meditation can transform our perception\, increase our confidence and fully connect us to the world around us\nThat mind is much more than just thoughts and emotions\nHow understanding the interdependency of all things and the principle of karma (that every action has an effect) gives us a logical basis for ethics and personal responsibility.\n\nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering you the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment.\n\nDetails for Term 2\nThis is the second term of a year long course that can be joined at any time.\nIf you wish to join after the commencement of each term and the registration is closed\, then please email us at newcastle@rigpa.org.au. It is possible to join and pay a pro rata amount. \nWhere: In person at Infuse Health\, 4/10 William Street\, Adamstown 2289. \nWhen: Tuesday Mornings for Ten weeks\, 30 April to 2 July. \nTime: 11:15am to 1:15pm Australian Eastern Time \nCost: Full $200\, Concession (concession card holders and Infuse Health members) $100 \nFREE for Rigpa members/subscribers. SUMMARY:Turning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment/Online
\nDetails for Term 2 \nWhere: Online \nWhen: Friday mornings\, for ten weeks\, 3 May to 5 July \nTime: 9.30am – 11:30 am\, Australian Eastern Time \n(Thursday 11.30pm Central European Time; Thursday 5.30pm US East Coast Time) \nThis is the second term of a year-long course. SUMMARY:How We Can Work with Anger
DESCRIPTION:Harming others out of anger brings suffering\, both to ourselves and others. Yet\, so often\, we don’t think of the consequences and instead find ourselves provoked and reacting impulsively\, only to regret it later. On the other hand\, if we just try to block or suppress anger when it arises\, it is very difficult to manage. So what can we do to deal with anger when it arises\, as it inevitably will? \nThe Buddhist teachings offer a rich toolkit to help us short circuit\, pacify\, and transform our anger. Join us for an afternoon investigating how we can apply those tools each and every day. \nSaturday’s Why Do We Suffer? session is part of our monthly program: Finding Peace and Joy in Troubled Times. This series of Saturday afternoon sessions offer an introduction to meditation and practical advice from some of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist teachers of our age. \nApplying these teachings can help us meet the challenges of these difficult times\, to heal ourselves\, and to bring us to the core of our own peace\, compassion and wisdom.
