SUMMARY:Inspiring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind: Impermanence\, Reflection and Change | Sydney | Friday morning Class
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an experiential journey through The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Discover a deep and universal wisdom explored in the major themes of the book\, and learn about their practical implications for living well. Suitable for people of any religion or of none\, this course encourages you to reflect on the Buddhist teachings\, to see what makes sense to you and to experiment with applying these teachings in your daily life. \nThe Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is widely regarded as one of the most complete and authoritative presentations of Tibetan Buddhism. A manual for life and death and a source of sacred inspiration from the heart of the Tibetan tradition\, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying provides a lucid and inspiring introduction to the practice of meditation\, to the nature of mind\, to karma and rebirth\, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path. The teachings\, meditation and contemplations from this authentic tradition reveal how each of us can live a more meaningful\, connected and fulfilling life. \nParticipants in this course will learn: \n\nHow to meditate\nHow an acceptance of impermanence can help us understand death and change our attitude towards life\nHow meditation can transform our perception\, increase our confidence and fully connect us to the world around us\nThat mind is much more than just thoughts and emotions\nHow understanding the interdependency of all things and the principle of karma (that every action has an effect) gives us a logical basis for ethics and personal responsibility\n\nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering you the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment.\n\nThis is module two of a year-long course that students can join at any stage. Each module focuses on a different topic. \nDetails \nModule Two – Impermanence\, Reflection and Change \nAll of us are touched by death in one way or another.  The Buddha said\, “If you want to know the truth of life and death\, you must reflect continuously on this: there is only one law in the universe that never changes—that all things change\, and that all things are impermanent.” \nIn the Buddhist approach\, life and death are seen as one whole. Death is a mirror in which the entire meaning of life is reflected. And we do not have to wait for the death of someone close to us to force us into looking at our lives. We can begin\, here and now\, to find meaning in our lives. \nCome with us on a journey investigating death and impermanence\, through deep reflection on change and interconnectedness\, to arrive at an appreciation of the vast potential of our own mind that is revealed when we let go of grasping at surface appearances. \nWhen: Friday mornings\, in person at 158 Australia St\, Newtown\, starting 8th May. \nTime: 10am – 11.30am \nWho: All welcome \nCost: 10 session module: Full $100\, Concession $50 \nFREE for Rigpa members/subscribers who may email newcastle@rigpa.org.au to request the discount code. \nIf you are experiencing financial hardship please email us at newcastle@rigpa.org.au to request a further concession.

SUMMARY:This Life: Key insights from the Buddha's life and teachings
DESCRIPTION:The Essence of the Three Yanas is the second module of the This Life course. It presents the key teachings and insights from the Buddha via the Three Vehicles: Peace\, Compassion & Wisdom. Through this nine week course\, we will explore how the treasure of this ancient wisdom may help us navigate the challenges in our modern society and learn to live a contented and meaningful life. \nThe course is aimed at people who have some experience of meditation and buddhist studies. \nThis course explores the Buddhist path to awakening through reflecting on the example of the Buddha\, understanding the fundamental message of his teachings\, the Dharma\, and looking into the value of the spiritual community—the Sangha —dedicated to following in the Buddha’s footsteps. \nThis course explores the life of the Buddha\, both in its historical context and from a spiritual perspective\, and reflects on the relevance that the Buddha’s life has for us now. \nIt presents the key principles of the Buddha’s Dharma teachings: including the four noble truths and the four seals\, which form the basis for all levels of practice on the Buddhist path. The course does not merely address these topics intellectually\, but rather gives students the opportunity to explore and internalize these crucial points through contemplation and practise. This will include examining: \n—The insights the Buddha’s teachings offer us about life and death. \n—How Buddhism is both a religion and a science of mind\, and how it differs from other religions and philosophies. \n—The Buddhist view of the nature of reality and ourselves. \nWe will also explore the idea and value of a spiritual community\, Sangha and the role it plays in the path to awakening. \nFor more experienced students this is a wonderful chance to clarify\, reinforce and deepen the crucial principles of our view and practice. \nRigpa’s policy is that financial difficulties should not be an obstacle to attending our courses. If this is an issue for you and attending this course\, please contact us at sydney@rigpa.org.au \nCurrent Sangha Members/Subscribers can register FREE using their discount code.

SUMMARY:The Search for a Sense of Personal Identity: a Buddhist View
DESCRIPTION:The Search for a Sense of Personal Identity: A Buddhist View  \nMoving through the highs and lows of life can challenge our sense of self\, and even create an identity crisis\, leading us asking ‘who are we in the face of loss and failure?’ Conversely\, experiences of success can feel self-affirming\, but may leave us fearing that they will not last or simply leave us wanting more. The Buddha found that the underlying cause of so much of our suffering is the immense pain of having lost touch with who we really are. \nIn this morning teaching\, Dominique Side will present some Buddhist insights into our true identity\, and show how\, by nurturing a deeper understanding of who we really are\, we can begin to find the confidence and inner strength to weather life’s ups and downs. \nWith Dominique’s fresh approach to this topic\, this evening will be dynamic and interactive\, with opportunities for personal reflection\, group dialogue and questions & answers. \nDetails \nDate: Sunday\, 4 October 2026\nTime: 10:00am – 12:30pm\nWhere: Temple on the Park\, 158 Australia St\, Newtown & Online\nFee (incl GST): Benefactor $75; Standard $55; Concession $18 \n  \nDominique Side’s Australian Tour \nThis talk is part of a series of five talks that Dominique will be presenting in Australia. Each talk covers a stand-alone topic\, but follows a progressive sequence. We strongly encourage you to attend the session in your city in person\, and join the others online. Register for all five talks and receive a 20% discount: register here. \nThis talk is one of two talks that Dominique will give on Sunday 4 October. SUMMARY:Understand Your Mind
DESCRIPTION:Understand Your Mind \nWhen we seek to find who we truly are\, we may find ourselves identifying with our mind. Our thoughts\, feelings\, emotions and opinions colour so much of how we see and interact with the world around us. \nIn this teaching\, Dominique Side will show how Buddhist psychology unpacks different facets of our mind to give us a clearer understanding of what mind is and how it functions. This gives us insights into how we can work with our mind to find a way out of our suffering and reveal our own capacity for inner peace. \nDetails \nDate: Sunday\, 4 October 2026\nTime: 2:30 – 5:00pm\nWhere: Temple on the Park\, 158 Australia St\, Newtown & Online\nFee (incl GST): Benefactor $75; Standard $55; Concession $18 \nDominique Side’s Australian Tour \nThis talk is part of a series of five talks that Dominique will be presenting in Australia.
