SUMMARY:This Life: Key insights from the Buddha's life and teachings
DESCRIPTION:The Essence of the Three Yanas is the second module of the This Life course. It presents the key teachings and insights from the Buddha via the Three Vehicles: Peace\, Compassion & Wisdom. Through this nine week course\, we will explore how the treasure of this ancient wisdom may help us navigate the challenges in our modern society and learn to live a contented and meaningful life. \nThe course is aimed at people who have some experience of meditation and buddhist studies. \nThis course explores the Buddhist path to awakening through reflecting on the example of the Buddha\, understanding the fundamental message of his teachings\, the Dharma\, and looking into the value of the spiritual community—the Sangha —dedicated to following in the Buddha’s footsteps. \nThis course explores the life of the Buddha\, both in its historical context and from a spiritual perspective\, and reflects on the relevance that the Buddha’s life has for us now. \nIt presents the key principles of the Buddha’s Dharma teachings: including the four noble truths and the four seals\, which form the basis for all levels of practice on the Buddhist path. The course does not merely address these topics intellectually\, but rather gives students the opportunity to explore and internalize these crucial points through contemplation and practise. This will include examining: \n—The insights the Buddha’s teachings offer us about life and death. \n—How Buddhism is both a religion and a science of mind\, and how it differs from other religions and philosophies. \n—The Buddhist view of the nature of reality and ourselves. \nWe will also explore the idea and value of a spiritual community\, Sangha and the role it plays in the path to awakening. \nFor more experienced students this is a wonderful chance to clarify\, reinforce and deepen the crucial principles of our view and practice. \nRigpa’s policy is that financial difficulties should not be an obstacle to attending our courses. If this is an issue for you and attending this course\, please contact us at sydney@rigpa.org.au \nCurrent Sangha Members/Subscribers can register FREE using their discount code.

SUMMARY:The Power of Your Mind: Kindness\, Clarity & Insight
DESCRIPTION:This five-day retreat will present the Mahayana Seven Points of Mind Training\, to lay out a path of formal meditation practice\, accompanied by guidelines for extending that practice into everyday life. \nThese teachings are precious and unique in presenting the entire depth and breadth of the Buddha’s Mahayana teachings succinctly and practically. Mahayana mind training offers an approach to life that is straightforward\, grounded in sanity\, kindness\, and compassion. Yet it also offers a vision that completely transcends our ordinary way of viewing ourselves and others\, with an all-encompassing vision of enlightenment. \nAt the heart of this vision of enlightenment is the view that our innate\, fundamental identity is vast\, luminous and utterly awake. The Mahayana teachings refer to this as our enlightened heart\, or bodhicitta. Enlightenment is nothing other than who we really are. But for most of us\, our true nature is like a hidden treasure\, concealed behind layers of mental activity and preoccupation. \nMahayana mind training helps us give expression to our enlightened heart in everything we think\, say and do. The training particularly focuses on our relationships\, which are like a mirror that shows us exactly where we are at. Our relationships also provide us with a way to dissolve the limitations that prevent the vastness of our true nature from fully manifesting. \nFounded on a practice lineage that has been actively and continually practised for hundreds of years\, these teachings are completely relevant to the challenges posed by our modern\, globalised life. \nTopics covered in the retreat will include: \n\nfinding meaning in our lives\, and connectedness with our world\novercoming loneliness and isolation\nhow to thrive in the face of difficulties\nhow to contribute to creating a more sustainable\, kind\, and compassionate world\n\nWe strongly encourage you to join us in person to get the most out of your retreat time. For those unable to travel to Sydney this retreat will be streamed to Rigpa’s centres in Adelaide and Melbourne. For those unable to attend a Rigpa centre\, a direct online option is also available. \nThis retreat will be led by Senior Teacher\, Jan van der Breggen\, along with a team of Rigpa Australia teachers and instructors. \nAbout Jan van der Breggen\n  \nJan is a teacher in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and a scholar of Buddhist philosophy. He began the path of meditation at 17 years old\, touched by the tenderness of the human experience and filled with questions about what reality was all about. He soon encountered the writings of great masters from various traditions such as J Krishnamurti\, Suzuki Roshi\, Thich Nhat Hang and Sogyal Rinpoche. Thirty years later\, Jan continues to be moved by the vast profundity of the Buddhist path and its vision of the inherent wisdom\, loving kindness and strength that lies in the minds of each and everyone of us. \nJan was honoured to be entrusted by Khenchen Namdrol Rinpoche and Mindroling Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche as one of the twenty-five worldwide Rigpa Senior teachers. In 2017\, he was selected to be a participant in the Milinda program\, a 10-year\, international Buddhist teacher training program under the guidance of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. \nJan grew up in the Netherlands where he earned a Masters Degree in Historical Anthropology. He is fluent in English and Dutch. He lives in Brisbane where he works as a data analytics professional. Jan was instrumental in founding Rigpa Brisbane in 1999\, where he has served as a Dharma instructor for over 20 years.

SUMMARY:Inspiring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind: The Deathless Unending Nature of Mind - Wednesday evenings
DESCRIPTION:The Deathless Unending Nature of Mind \nWe have been taught to spend our lives chasing our thoughts and projections. Even when “mind” is talked about\, what is referred to is thoughts and emotions alone… We rarely look into the mind itself\, the ground from which all these expressions arise. \nIn this module\, we explore our thoughts\, emotions and mind to yield understandings that make meditation truly meaningful. The highest goal of meditation is to awaken in us the vast\, wise and compassionate\, sky-like nature of our mind and introduce to us who we really are: unchanging pure awareness. Instead of meditation being merely a way of bringing temporary relaxation\, it can become a powerful cause for your long-lasting happiness and the benefit of others. \nThis is part of a year long course based on The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying\, you can join at any time. This module explores The Deathless Unending Nature of Mind  (Module 3 of the full-year course). New students are welcome. \n📍 Online and Rigpa Sydney\, 158 Australia St\, Newtown.\n🗓️ Wednesday evenings\, this module runs for 5 weeks from 29 April to 27 May 2026\n⏰ 6.30pm – 8.30pm (AEST)

SUMMARY:Inspiring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind: Understanding Death & Impermanence
DESCRIPTION:All of us are touched by death in one way or another.  The Buddha said\, “If you want to know the truth of life and death\, you must reflect continuously on this: there is only one law in the universe that never changes—that all things change\, and that all things are impermanent.” \nIn the Buddhist approach\, life and death are seen as one whole. Death is a mirror in which the entire meaning of life is reflected. And we do not have to wait for the death of someone close to us to force us into looking at our lives. We can begin\, here and now\, to find meaning in our lives. \nCome with us on a journey investigating death and impermanence\, through deep reflection on change and interconnectedness\, to arrive at an appreciation of the vast potential of our own mind that is revealed when we let go of grasping at surface appearances. \n📍 Online and Sydney\, 158 Australia St\, Newtown.\n🗓️ Wednesday evenings\, starting 18 March\n⏰ 6.30pm – 8.30pm (Australian Eastern Time)

SUMMARY:Inspiring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind: The Deathless Unending Nature of Mind

SUMMARY:Know your mind\, transform your life
DESCRIPTION:This five-day retreat will take you to the heart of the revolutionary insight of Buddhism\, that life and death are in the mind\, and nowhere else. In Dzogchen—the most direct stream of wisdom within the teachings of Buddhism—the mind is revealed as the universal basis of experience: the creator of happiness and the creator of suffering. \nGuided by the teachings of the Buddha\, deep reflection\, and our own personal meditative insight\, we will investigate exactly how the mind is the root of our entire reality. This exploration leads to a profound certainty and confidence in our mind’s essence: the lucid\, pure awareness that underlies the whole of life and death. \nThe foundation of trust in our inherently pure nature\, allows us to investigate \n\nhow the mind’s unending display of thoughts and emotions are workable\nthe cognitive and emotional patterns of delusion that perpetuate samsara; and\nthe challenging\, yet liberating notion\, that ‘samsara is mind turned outwardly\, lost in its projection\, whereas nirvana is mind turned inwardly\, recognising its nature.’\n\nThis paves the way to the profound method of leaving the mind unaltered in its true nature\, finding a natural great peace\, bliss and clarity. \nThe retreat will allow for reflection and meditation on the teachings tailored to each participants’ prior experience: from complete beginners to ngondro\, and dzogchen practitioners. \nJoin us for a journey from our ordinary\, everyday mind\, to the true essence and nature of mind. \n  \n📍Rigpa Melbourne\, 803 Nicholson St\, Carlton North;\n📍Rigpa Sydney\, 158 Australia St\, Newtown\n📍& Online \n(Those gathering at the Rigpa Melbourne Centre will view the live event from Sydney via Zoom. To attend the retreat at the Melbourne Centre\, please select the online option when registering. You may register to attend part or all of the retreat. Our Melbourne team will then be in touch to confirm arrangements.)

SUMMARY:The Wisdom of Compassion - The Six Paramitas
DESCRIPTION:Much as we may wish to be kind\, caring and loving\, often this may be difficult for us in practice. As we move from wishing to be more compassionate to grappling with how we put this into action\, the Buddhist teachings include six tools in a how-to guide: \n1. Generosity: cultivating the attitude of generosity. \n2. Discipline: refraining from harm. \n3. Patience: not being perturbed by anything. \n4. Diligence: finding joy in what is virtuous\, positive or wholesome. \n5. Meditative concentration: not being distracted. \n6. Wisdom: the perfect discrimination of all knowable things. \nThese are known as the Six Paramitas\, or transcendent perfections and contain all the vital skills needed for us to transform our mind and open our heart. \nThis twelve-week course addresses each of the Six Paramitas in turn\, offering a wealth of practical advice to help us put our best biggest heart into action everyday. \n

SUMMARY:Inspiring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind | The Spiritual Path - Sydney and Online
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Path (Module 6 of the full-year course\, new students are welcome to join) \nThe first declaration that the Buddha made at the time of his enlightenment was: “Profound peace\, free of complexity\, natural simplicity\, uncompounded luminosity.” \nThis module examines what enlightenment is and explores the practical training of the Tibetan Buddhist Dzogchen Path in terms of View\, Meditation and Action. To see directly the absolute state\, the Ground of our being\, is the View; the way of stabilizing that View and making it an unbroken experience is Meditation; and integrating the View into our entire reality\, and life\, is what is meant by Action. \n

SUMMARY:An open heart in tumultuous times
DESCRIPTION:An open heart in tumultuous times\nHow the Buddhist approach to compassionate living can nourish us all. \nHis Eminence the 7th Yongzin Ling Rinpoche will teach on Bodhichitta and the Eight Verses of Training the Mind. \nGive all profit and gain to others\,\nTake all loss and defeat on yourself. \nThese astounding words\, so contrary to our conventional worldview\, encapsulate the Buddhist teaching of training the mind in compassion. \nThe compassion teachings summarised in the Eight Verses challenge us to go beyond our usual fixed ideas and assumptions\, revealing a much bigger\, brighter\, freer version of ourselves. By learning how to overcome a limited view of ourselves we can begin to relate to others\, ourselves\, and the world with more kindness\, compassion\, and understanding. We start to see through divisiveness and antagonism and experience a deep and liberating connection with others. \nAt a tumultuous time when our lives are getting fuller\, faster and more stressful\, the advice and practical training contained in the Eight Verses is invaluable in helping us to not only cope with the challenges of our life but to actually use them as the raw material for our awakening. \n🗓️ Friday 1 August\n⏰7:15pm\n📍Rigpa Sydney\, 158 Australia St\, Newtown & Online via Zoom \nAbout Ling Rinpoche \nLing Choktrul Rinpoche (7th Kyabjé Yongzin Ling Rinpoche) is an important lama of the Gelugpa school\, born in India and recognized at an early age by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of his Principal Teacher\, His Holiness the 6th Kyabje Yongzin Ling Rinpoche. \nLing Rinpoche entered Drepung Monastic University in South India in 1990. He received his geshe degree in 2016 and completed his tantric studies in 2018. \nSince the early 1990s he has given teachings and tantric initiations in many countries in Asia and Europe\, North America and Australia. He has participated in the Mind and Life Institute dialogues between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and scientists on a variety of topics\, such as physics\, neuroplasticity and destructive emotions.

SUMMARY:Inspiring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind | Rebirth\, Karma and This Life - Sydney and Online
DESCRIPTION:Rebirth\, Karma and This Life (Module 5 of the full-year course\, new students welcome) \nThis module explores the Buddhist reasoning for the acceptance of rebirth and reincarnation. We will use the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths as a framework to help us take stock of our lives\, inspire a shift in the way we see ourselves and the way we relate to the world around us. Lastly\, the module investigates Karma. Karma is often misunderstood in as fate or pre-destination. Karma\, however if understood well\, presents us with an opportunity to be free from our suffering.

SUMMARY:The Essence of Tibetan Buddhism: A Weekend with Jan van der Breggen
DESCRIPTION:In this weekend of teachings\, shared reflection\, and meditation practice\, Jan van der Breggen will guide participants through an exploration of key elements of Tibetan Buddhist tradition\, with the aim to help anyone — whether new to Buddhism or with an already established practice path — establish a meaningful relationship with the vast and colourful world of Tibetan Buddhism. \nThe Buddhist path can be divided into three broad stages: the foundational path\, emphasizing peace\, the mahayana path\, emphasizing compassion and wisdom\, and the vajrayana path\, emphasizing transforming our perception of ourselves and the world we live in. \nDuring this weekend we will explore how this third approach — that of transforming our perception\,  forms a thread that runs throughout all three stages. It is founded on the view that the awakened state\, enlightenment\, is right here\, in the present moment\, and can be brought into every aspect of the spiritual path. \nFrom this perspective\, our world and our reality depend entirely on our own mind\, and the way it perceives reality. And so\, the unsatisfactory nature of our lives that Buddha’s teachings speak of\, is not caused by an inherent problem with our world. Instead\, it is a result of our limited\, distorted perception. \nFounded on this view\, Tibetan Buddhism is marked by a rich array of skilful methods which it has nurtured and perfected over hundreds of years. This includes basic meditation practices to calm and stabilise the mind; contemplative methods to awaken in us deep wisdom and vast compassion; visualization practice\, mantra recitation\, and profound meditation to help us arrive swiftly at a direct realization of our true nature and the nature of reality itself. \nDuring this workshop we will explore some of these methods\, and how each of them is founded upon the view they are designed to help us bring into direct\, personal experience. \nAbout Jan van der Breggen \nJan began his path of meditation at 17 years old\, touched by the tenderness of the human experience and filled with questions about what reality was all about. Thirty years later\, Jan continues to be moved by the vast profundity of the Buddhist path and its vision of the inherent wisdom\, loving kindness and strength that lies in the minds of each and every one of us. \nJan completed Rigpa’s three-year retreat\, is a Senior teacher\, and\, in 2017\, he was selected to participate in the Milinda program\, a 10-year\, international Buddhist teacher training program under the guidance of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. \nJan grew up in the Netherlands and has lived in Brisbane\, Australia\, since 1998\, where he obtained a postgraduate degree in information technology. He makes a living as a data and analytics professional for a large financial service provider. Jan was instrumental in founding Rigpa Brisbane in 1999\, where he has served as a Dharma instructor for over 20 years.
