A manual for life and death and a source of sacred inspiration from the heart of the Tibetan tradition\, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying provides a lucid and inspiring introduction to the practice of meditation\, to the nature of mind\, to karma and rebirth\, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path. The teachings\, meditation and contemplations from this authentic tradition reveal how each of us can live a more meaningful\, connected and fulfilling life. \nIn term three we will be introduced to the Tibetan Buddhist compassion practices with a particular focus on loving kindness practice. Meditating on loving kindness can help us restore our love and confidence\, and heal unresolved emotional wounds. It also puts us back in touch with the fundamental goodness of our core being\, and once that has\nhappened\, we are able to love ourselves and others. \nWe will also explore the Buddhist approach to practicing compassion and how to apply it in all situations. The first step to compassion is to realize that other people are just like you. They too wish to be happy and free from suffering. Then\, though the practice of Tonglen (giving and receiving)\, we begin to to mentally take on the suffering of others with\ncompassion\, and give your happiness and wellbeing with love. DESCRIPTION:A new course offered by Rigpa Brisbane | Wednesday evenings | 7:00pm – 8:45pm \nFor 10 sessions at Rigpa Brisbane \nStarting 5 June 2024 \nWith Jan van der Breggen \n\nThis course explores the transformative power of compassion\, and how to respond to the challenges of our lives in an open hearted\, compassionate way. In the Buddhist tradition compassion is treasured as a powerful source of healing and inner strength\, and the key to building meaningful relationships. \nWe will take our life experiences as the starting point of our 10-week journey. They are the ‘raw materials’ for developing compassion. We will explore how opening our mind and heart to our own and others’ experiences of happiness and suffering helps us connect with our innate capacity for empathy.  Compassion\, then\, arises when we take this natural capacity for empathy—that love and affection we all feel for one another— and combine it with wisdom. The basis of this wisdom is a deep understanding of suffering and its causes\, and a realisation that our own happiness and the happiness of others are deeply connected and dependent on each other. \nThe course will draw on a variety of sources\, ranging from insights of contemporary science and philosophy to the direct teachings of Buddha recorded in ancient texts called sutra and abhidharma\, to contemporary masters who hold the living and unbroken transmission of the Buddha’s wisdom mind and are able to guide us from the depth of their insight and compassion. \n  \n \nAbout Jan van der Breggen \nJan has studied and practised the Dharma since the mid-1990s\, learning from many great masters\, but principally from Sogyal Rinpoche and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. From 2006 to 2009\, he participated in a three-year meditation retreat in France. \nIn 2022\, Jan was entrusted by Khenchen Namdrol Rinpoche and Mindrolling Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche as one of the twenty-five\, worldwide Rigpa Senior Teachers. In 2017 he was selected to be a participant of the Milinda program\, a 10-year\, international Buddhist teacher training program under the guidance of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. \nJan grew up in the Netherlands where he earnt his masters degree in Historical Anthropology. Suitable for people of any religion or of none\, this course encourages you to reflect on the Buddhist teachings\, to see what makes sense to you and to experiment with applying these teachings in your daily life. \nThe Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is widely regarded as one of the most complete and authoritative presentations of Tibetan Buddhism. A manual for life and death and a source of sacred inspiration from the heart of the Tibetan tradition\, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying provides a lucid and inspiring introduction to the practice of meditation\, to the nature of mind\, to karma and rebirth\, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path. The teachings\, meditation and contemplations from this authentic tradition reveal how each of us can live a more meaningful\, connected and fulfilling life. \nIn term three we will be introduced to the Tibetan Buddhist compassion practices with a particular focus on loving kindness practice. Meditating on loving kindness can help us restore our love and confidence\, and heal unresolved emotional wounds. It also puts us back in touch with the fundamental goodness of our core being\, and once that has\nhappened\, we are able to love ourselves and others. \nWe will also explore the Buddhist approach to practicing compassion and how to apply it in all situations. The first step to compassion is to realize that other people are just like you. They too wish to be happy and free from suffering. Then\, though the practice of Tonglen (giving and receiving)\, we begin to to mentally take on the suffering of others with\ncompassion\, and give your happiness and wellbeing with love. So that ultimately our every action can be an act of compassion. \nOver the course of the year you will learn: \n\nHow an acceptance of impermanence can help us understand death and change our attitude towards life\nHow meditation can transform our perception\, increase our confidence and fully connect us to the world around us\nThat mind is much more than just thoughts and emotions\nHow understanding the interdependency of all things and the principle of karma (that every action has an effect) gives us a logical basis for ethics and personal responsibility.\n\nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering you the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment.\n\nDetails for Term 3\nThis is the third term of a year long course that can be joined at any time.\nIf you wish to join after the commencement of each term and the registration is closed\, then please email us at newcastle@rigpa.org.au.
