SUMMARY:Turning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment/Term 3/Online
DESCRIPTION:The Buddhist teachings show us a way to find a deep sense of fulfillment that does not depend on outer circumstances and is naturally ours. Through a process of reflection and meditation\, we find inner strength\, which allows us to fully and fearlessly engage with everything we experience in our lives. Then\, all our experiences – happy or sad\, good or bad – will become a source of personal growth and spiritual awakening: they have the potential to open our eyes and our heart\, and make us grow wiser and more compassionate. \nTurning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment will present teachings that offer commentary of the classic\, short and pithy text\, Taking Happiness and Suffering on our Path\, by the great Dzogchen master Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima. This text presents the Buddha’s teachings on how to transform suffering and happiness in a manner that is easy to understand and put into practice. \nDetails for Term 3 \nWhere: Online \nWhen: Friday mornings\, eight sessions\, 26 July to 27 September with a break from  16th August to Friday 23rd August \nTime: 9.30am – 11:30 am\, Australian Eastern Time \n(Thursday 11.30pm Central European Time; Thursday 5.30pm US East Coast Time) \nThis is the third term of a year-long course. If you wish to join after the first two weeks of a term then please register and pay a pro rata amount by sending  an email enquiry to newcastle@rigpa.org.au. SUMMARY:August Monthly Sangha Gathering: The Way of the Great Perfection
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 4 August\, 9.30am-1.00pm\nIn Person at the Sydney Centre (158 Australia Street\, Newtown) & Online \nIn August we will present: Liberation: Is it possible in this life? – a teaching by Alain Beauregard \nNo matter who we are\, we all share the same wish to be happy and free from suffering. But when we are immersed in the responsibilities of this life and in all our frenetic daily activity\, it may seem impossible to achieve liberation\, that is only for special beings. But nothing could be further from the truth: when we realize the suffering caused by our way of living in samsara\, a desire arises within us to be free from it\, and the practice of the dharma offers us the possibility of liberation in this life. \nThis session is part of our Monthly Sangha Gathering series presenting highlights from: The Way of the Great Perfection \, a new cycle of the All-Encompassing Path to Enlightenment. \nThe ground is our buddha nature\, \nThe support is this precious human life\, \nThe wonderful circumstance is meeting a spiritual teacher\, and \nThe method is the pith instructions through which we can realise our true nature\, the buddha. \nGampopa\, The Jewel Ornament of Liberation \nThe All-Encompassing Path to Enlightenment is the main study programme in Rigpa\, for students of all levels: new\, more advanced or in-between. In this cycle\, The Way of the Great Perfection\, we will explore the main principles of the preliminary practices in a fresh way. These practices are a complete path in themselves and also the foundation for Vajrayana and Dzogchen practice. \nThe preliminary practices\, called Ngöndro in Tibetan\, encompasses all the elements needed to prepare us to fully receive the Great Perfection teachings of Dzogchen\, the highest and most direct stream of wisdom within the Buddhist tradition of Tibet. \nSo no matter where we are on our path\, this new cycle will support us in taking it to completion. Our senior and most experienced Rigpa teachers will guide us through the key principles of the Ngöndro\, helping us to discover or revisit these principles in a fresh\, up-to-date\, real life way\, while preserving their authenticity. \nEach session will offer guided contemplations\, group meditations\, exercises and discussions. \nThe goal of this multi-year programme of The Way of the Great Perfection is for us to arrive at a thorough and complete understanding of what the teachings tell us about the different methods of Buddhist practice\, to reach a complete certainty on how we apply them in daily life\, and ultimately realise the innermost nature of our own minds. \nWe warmly invite you to attend in person at our National Centre in Newtown but if this is really not possible for you\, you may join online by Zoom. \nHeld on one Sunday each Month\, 9.30am – 1.00pm \nNext sessions on 4 August\, 1 September\, 27 October\, 3 November\, 1 December \nCost: Adult: $20\, Concession $10\, Rigpa Subscribers (members): free \n(Subscribers\, if you have not received a discount code\, please email sydney@rigpa.org.au.) \nPlease Note: Sangha members who wish to engage in this All Encompassing Path Program: The Way of the Great Perfection more fully please email us at newcastle@rigpa.org.au. \nLapsed sangha members who wish to reengage with sangha studies can also contact us at the above Newcastle Rigpa email address.

SUMMARY:Inspiring a Revolution in your Heart and Mind / Term 3 / Newcastle
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we take you an experiential journey through The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Discover a deep and universal wisdom explored in the major themes of the book\, and learn about their practical implications for living well. Suitable for people of any religion or of none\, this course encourages you to reflect on the Buddhist teachings\, to see what makes sense to you and to experiment with applying these teachings in your daily life. \nThe Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is widely regarded as one of the most complete and authoritative presentations of Tibetan Buddhism. A manual for life and death and a source of sacred inspiration from the heart of the Tibetan tradition\, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying provides a lucid and inspiring introduction to the practice of meditation\, to the nature of mind\, to karma and rebirth\, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path. The teachings\, meditation and contemplations from this authentic tradition reveal how each of us can live a more meaningful\, connected and fulfilling life. \nIn term three we will be introduced to the Tibetan Buddhist compassion practices with a particular focus on loving kindness practice. Meditating on loving kindness can help us restore our love and confidence\, and heal unresolved emotional wounds. It also puts us back in touch with the fundamental goodness of our core being\, and once that has\nhappened\, we are able to love ourselves and others. \nWe will also explore the Buddhist approach to practicing compassion and how to apply it in all situations. The first step to compassion is to realize that other people are just like you. They too wish to be happy and free from suffering. Then\, though the practice of Tonglen (giving and receiving)\, we begin to to mentally take on the suffering of others with\ncompassion\, and give your happiness and wellbeing with love. So that ultimately our every action can be an act of compassion. \nOver the course of the year you will learn: \n\nHow an acceptance of impermanence can help us understand death and change our attitude towards life\nHow meditation can transform our perception\, increase our confidence and fully connect us to the world around us\nThat mind is much more than just thoughts and emotions\nHow understanding the interdependency of all things and the principle of karma (that every action has an effect) gives us a logical basis for ethics and personal responsibility.\n\nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering you the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment.\n\nDetails for Term 3\nThis is the third term of a year long course that can be joined at any time.\nIf you wish to join after the commencement of each term and the registration is closed\, then please email us at newcastle@rigpa.org.au. It is possible to join and pay a pro rata amount. \nWhere: In person at Infuse Health\, 4/10 William Street\, Adamstown 2289. \nWhen: Tuesday Mornings for  eight sessions\, 23 July to 24 September with a break between  13th August and 20th August \nTime: 11:15am to 1:15pm Australian Eastern Time \nCost: Full $160\, Concession (concession card holders and Infuse Health members) $80 \nFREE for Rigpa members/subscribers. SUMMARY:Warm Heart\, Wise Mind: A deep dive into our own compassionate nature
DESCRIPTION:A new course offered by Rigpa Brisbane | Wednesday evenings | 7:00pm – 8:45pm \nFor 10 sessions at Rigpa Brisbane \nStarting 5 June 2024 \nWith Jan van der Breggen \n\nThis course explores the transformative power of compassion\, and how to respond to the challenges of our lives in an open hearted\, compassionate way. In the Buddhist tradition compassion is treasured as a powerful source of healing and inner strength\, and the key to building meaningful relationships. \nWe will take our life experiences as the starting point of our 10-week journey. They are the ‘raw materials’ for developing compassion. We will explore how opening our mind and heart to our own and others’ experiences of happiness and suffering helps us connect with our innate capacity for empathy.  Compassion\, then\, arises when we take this natural capacity for empathy—that love and affection we all feel for one another— and combine it with wisdom. The basis of this wisdom is a deep understanding of suffering and its causes\, and a realisation that our own happiness and the happiness of others are deeply connected and dependent on each other. \nThe course will draw on a variety of sources\, ranging from insights of contemporary science and philosophy to the direct teachings of Buddha recorded in ancient texts called sutra and abhidharma\, to contemporary masters who hold the living and unbroken transmission of the Buddha’s wisdom mind and are able to guide us from the depth of their insight and compassion. \n  \n \nAbout Jan van der Breggen \nJan has studied and practised the Dharma since the mid-1990s\, learning from many great masters\, but principally from Sogyal Rinpoche and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. From 2006 to 2009\, he participated in a three-year meditation retreat in France. \nIn 2022\, Jan was entrusted by Khenchen Namdrol Rinpoche and Mindrolling Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche as one of the twenty-five\, worldwide Rigpa Senior Teachers. In 2017 he was selected to be a participant of the Milinda program\, a 10-year\, international Buddhist teacher training program under the guidance of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. \nJan grew up in the Netherlands where he earnt his masters degree in Historical Anthropology. He is fluent in English and Dutch\, and lives in Brisbane where he works as a data analytics professional whilst being involved in the Rigpa Brisbane and National Centre as a dharma teacher. \n  \nThis course is suitable for:  Beginners and experienced students alike \nWhen: 10 weekly classes\, Wednesday 5 June to 7 August 2024\, 7 to 8.45pm AEST \nWhere: In person at Rigpa Brisbane\, 19 Enoggera Tce\, Red Hill (online attendance only available if you do not live in Brisbane) \nCost: $200 full fee or $110 concession \nFor Rigpa subscribers: The course is included in your subscription fees (registration is still required\, just close the payment page that comes up after registration.)
