SUMMARY:Know your mind\, transform your life
DESCRIPTION:This five-day retreat will take you to the heart of the revolutionary insight of Buddhism\, that life and death are in the mind\, and nowhere else. In Dzogchen—the most direct stream of wisdom within the teachings of Buddhism—the mind is revealed as the universal basis of experience: the creator of happiness and the creator of suffering. \nGuided by the teachings of the Buddha\, deep reflection\, and our own personal meditative insight\, we will investigate exactly how the mind is the root of our entire reality. This exploration leads to a profound certainty and confidence in our mind’s essence: the lucid\, pure awareness that underlies the whole of life and death. \nThe foundation of trust in our inherently pure nature\, allows us to investigate \n\nhow the mind’s unending display of thoughts and emotions are workable\nthe cognitive and emotional patterns of delusion that perpetuate samsara; and\nthe challenging\, yet liberating notion\, that ‘samsara is mind turned outwardly\, lost in its projection\, whereas nirvana is mind turned inwardly\, recognising its nature.’\n\nThis paves the way to the profound method of leaving the mind unaltered in its true nature\, finding a natural great peace\, bliss and clarity. \nThe retreat will allow for reflection and meditation on the teachings tailored to each participants’ prior experience: from complete beginners to ngondro\, and dzogchen practitioners. \nJoin us for a journey from our ordinary\, everyday mind\, to the true essence and nature of mind. \n  \n📍Rigpa Melbourne\, 803 Nicholson St\, Carlton North;\n📍Rigpa Sydney\, 158 Australia St\, Newtown\n📍& Online \n(Those gathering at the Rigpa Melbourne Centre will view the live event from Sydney via Zoom. To attend the retreat at the Melbourne Centre\, please select the online option when registering. You may register to attend part or all of the retreat. Our Melbourne team will then be in touch to confirm arrangements.)

SUMMARY:The Wealth of Our Innate Wakefulness - Sunday 9 November 2025
DESCRIPTION:Please note that the teachings in day 2 follow on from day 1 with a beginning\, middle and end\, and therefore it is advisable to register for both days. All effort will be made to help those unable to attend both days to catch up. \nA weekend teaching on buddha nature\nOut of all of Buddha’s teachings\, those on buddha nature communicate most directly what lies at their heart: that we are fundamentally good\, and our essential nature\, our identity\, is the same profound\, peaceful\, stainless\, lucid\, and unconditioned‍ essence that Buddha himself discovered as a result of following the spiritual path. \nConfidence in buddha nature is deeply transformative in terms of our outlook on life; the way we view ourselves\, the world around us\, our values and priorities in life\, our relationship to our spiritual path: all this is touched by the teachings on buddha nature. \nThis weekend teaching will bring together classic Indian and Tibetan Buddhist teachings on buddha nature\, and contemporary teachings by Sogyal Rinpoche\, which will give us the opportunity to discover our own buddha nature\, and give expression to it in our thoughts and actions. \nWe will work together on building confidence in our buddha nature through the practice of contemplation — which will enable us to see its relevance to our own lives and experience — and more experientially\, through the practice of meditation: learning to let go and relax in the clarity and awareness of our mind which is available to us all the time. \nTogether we will reflect on questions like: \n\nWhat are we looking for in life? And why?\nWho are we really? If our thoughts\, emotions\, our body\, and our world are always changing\, is there something in us that is really ‘us ’\, which is constant and unchanging?\nWhat is mind?\nHow can I know I have buddha nature?\nIf my mind’s nature is buddha nature\, why am I suffering?\nHow to overcome fear?\nHow do we habitually relate to ourselves and others? And why?\nWhat is wisdom? And what is compassion?\nHow can I come to fully actualise my buddha nature?\n\nAbout Jan van der Breggen \nJan began his path of meditation at 17 years old\, touched by the tenderness of the human experience and filled with questions about what reality was all about. Forty years later\, Jan continues to be moved by the vast profundity of the Buddhist path and its vision of the inherent wisdom\, loving kindness and strength that lies in the minds of each and every one of us. \nJan completed Rigpa’s three-year retreat under the guidance of Sogyal Rinpoche. He was entrusted as one of Rigpa’s Senior teachers by Khenchen Namdrol Rinpoche and Mindroling Jetsun Khandro in 2022. Jan has been a participant in the Milinda program since 2017. Milinda is a 10-year\, international Buddhist teacher training program under the guidance of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche\, with a three month per year intensive and immersive in-person learning and reflection program. \nJan grew up in the Netherlands where he obtained a Masters Degree in Social and Historical Anthropology. He has lived in Brisbane\, Australia\, since 1998\, and was instrumental in founding Rigpa Brisbane in 1999\, where he has served as a Dharma instructor for over 20 years. \nAbout Alessandra Pizzardello \nAlessandra is a dedicated practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism with over 20 years of study and retreat experience\, including at Rigpa Shedra East in Nepal. \nOriginally from Italy\, she also lived in Sweden and Australia\, where she started a successful business that has been running for over two decades before deciding to fully committing to the Dharma. Rooted in the Nyingma and Longchen Nyingtik traditions\, Alessandra has been sharing the Buddhist teachings as a Dharma instructor in Australia for several years\, with the heartfelt wish to support and inspire others on their own path of study and practice. \n  \nCost for each day : \nSangha and Concession: $30 per day \nFull Price: $50 per day \nBenefactor $75 per day \nBYO lunch \nMorning and Afternoon tea provided \n

SUMMARY:Meditation\, Compassion & Wisdom in Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that the Fifth Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche has offered to teach in our Melbourne Centre on the evenings of September 19 and 20 and for the day on Sunday September 21. He is a Kempo who studied at Larang Gar under Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche.\n\nSunday September 21 from 10am till 4pm\nMeditation\, Compassion & Wisdom in Everyday Life”\n\nAbout Rinpoche\nThe Fifth Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche was born in 1970\, amid many auspicious signs\, and was soon recognised as the reincarnation of the Fourth Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche of Ju Mohor Monastery.\n\nEven as a young boy\, he was unlike his peers. He had a particularly loving and compassionate nature that was noted and appreciated by all who met him. Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche showed exceptional intelligence in all his studies and attained perfect understanding in all he was taught.\n\nWith the guidance of his spiritual teachers\, he undertook all the traditional training of his lineage. This included accumulating the 500\,000 ngondro practices\, and training in the Rigdzin lineage tradition including the essential Dzogchen instructions of kadak trekchö and lhundrop tögal during which time he gained extraordinary insights and experiences from his meditation practice. This training culminated in a three year retreat at Yachen Orgyen Samten Choeling\, under the regular guidance of HH Lama Achuk Rinpoche.\n\nAt the age of 18 years he was formally enthroned as the Fifth Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche and abbot of Ju Monastery.\nHis education continued at the great university centre of Larang Gar at Serthar. He studied the different schools of Buddhist philosophy and the sutra and tantra under a number of teachers\, particularly the founder of Larang Gar\, HH Khenchen Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche. He graduated from Larang Gar as a Khenpo at the age of 25.\n\nLater\, Rinpoche returned to Ju Mohor Monastery to give teachings\, to the great benefit of the monastic community there. During this time\, Rinpoche also received many empowerments\, oral transmissions and pith instructions of the secret Nyingmapa kama and terma traditions from a number of scholars and practitioners including HH Drupwang Pema Norbu\, Khenpo Pema Tsewang\, Venerable Gyangkhang Tulku\, Venerable Khenpo Choekyap\, Venerable Trulshig Rinpoche and Venerable Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche and several teachings on Secret Mantrayana from Venerable Ngorlu Ding Khenchen.\n\nRinpoche is now heading the groundbreaking Vista Project\, based in Sershul\, the town closest to Ju Mohor Monastery. The aim of the Vista Project is to revitalise the economic and cultural lives of the Tibetan people. Although the Chinese economy is growing rapidly\, the nomadic peoples of Eastern Tibet are often unable to take advantage of the opportunities available. The Vista Project aims to provide basic education and vocational training to enable local nomads to survive and prosper in the modern economic climate and also to preserve and cultivate the ancient culture of Tibet.

He had a particularly loving and compassionate nature that was noted and appreciated by all who met him. Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche showed exceptional intelligence in all his studies and attained perfect understanding in all he was taught.\nWith the guidance of his spiritual teachers\, he undertook all the traditional training of his lineage. This included accumulating the 500\,000 ngondro practices\, and training in the Rigdzin lineage tradition including the essential Dzogchen instructions of kadak trekchö and lhundrop tögal during which time he gained extraordinary insights and experiences from his meditation practice. This training culminated in a three year retreat at Yachen Orgyen Samten Choeling\, under the regular guidance of HH Lama Achuk Rinpoche.\nAt the age of 18 years he was formally enthroned as the Fifth Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche and abbot of Ju Monastery.\nHis education continued at the great university centre of Larang Gar at Serthar. He studied the different schools of Buddhist philosophy and the sutra and tantra under a number of teachers\, particularly the founder of Larang Gar\, HH Khenchen Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche. He graduated from Larang Gar as a Khenpo at the age of 25.\nLater\, Rinpoche returned to Ju Mohor Monastery to give teachings\, to the great benefit of the monastic community there. During this time\, Rinpoche also received many empowerments\, oral transmissions and pith instructions of the secret Nyingmapa kama and terma traditions from a number of scholars and practitioners including HH Drupwang Pema Norbu\, Khenpo Pema Tsewang\, Venerable Gyangkhang Tulku\, Venerable Khenpo Choekyap\, Venerable Trulshig Rinpoche and Venerable Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche and several teachings on Secret Mantrayana from Venerable Ngorlu Ding Khenchen.\nRinpoche is now heading the groundbreaking Vista Project\, based in Sershul\, the town closest to Ju Mohor Monastery.

SUMMARY:Bringing the Mind Home - Finding Inner Peace\, Compassion\, and Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:The key message of Buddha’s teachings is both empowering and optimistic: that inherent in the essential nature of our mind is a kindness\, compassion\, and wisdom that is naturally ours. And through the simple\, yet revolutionary shift in orientation that comes when we learn to turn within and come to know that aspect of our mind\, we will come to discover within ourselves a tremendous capacity to benefit ourselves and our world. \nThe teachings of the Buddha say that when we understand our mind\, we understand ourselves and who we really are\, and this brings with it a deep sense of peace\, confidence\, and well-being. For those of us who are searching for a wholesome relationship with ourselves and the world around us\, Buddha’s message is an invitation for exploration and investigation. \nThe Buddha never asked anyone to just believe what he said\, but instead asked us to deeply investigate anything before accepting it. In this course\, we invite you to do exactly this\, and will facilitate a process of \n\nlearning about what Buddha had to say about our mind\, and its role in creating our reality\nreflection and investigating this to see if it rings true to you\, and challenging our own views and habits in light of our understanding\nmeditation – which is a direct and experiential process of clearly and directly seeing your own mind and reality\, in light of the insights gained through learning and reflection\n\nThe course draws on a variety of sources\, ranging from the direct teachings of Buddha recorded in ancient texts called sutra and abhidharma\, to contemporary masters who hold the living and unbroken transmission of the Buddha’s wisdom mind\, and are able to guide us from the depth of their insight and compassion. \n  \nCourse details \nThis is the first module of a two part course. It can be followed as as stand-alone course or taken together with the next course module\, which will run from Wednesday 20 August to Wednesday 8 October 2025 \n\nWhen: Weekly classes on Wednesday evenings from 11 June to 30 July 2025\, 7:00 – 8:45pm AEST. Practice based classes on Sunday 29 June and Sunday 27 July\, 9:30am to 3:30pm AEST\nWhere: \nin person at Rigpa Brisbane\, 2/19 Enoggera Terrace\, Red Hill; \nin person at Rigpa Melbourne\, 803 Nicholson St\, Carlton North and \nonline (online attendance only available if you do not live in Brisbane or Melbourne)\nCost: $200 full fee or $110 concession\n\nFor Rigpa subscribers: The course is included in your subscription fees

SUMMARY:The Wisdom of Compassion | Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:Presenting key Buddhist teachings on the powerful logic of compassion and practical methods for developing a more kind relationship with ourselves\, those around us and ultimately all beings. \nOur innate capacity for empathy is the source of the very best of human qualities: love\, kindness\, generosity\, warm-heartedness\, courage … compassion. Although we are born with a vast capacity to love\, we may not know how to do so unconditionally\, or how to express that love in practice. \nWhen our heart and mind are filled with love\, we find the greatest inner healing\, tranquillity and well-being. Modern research shows that with empathy and compassion we can be more fully ourselves\, connect more easily with others\, improve self worth and reduce self-criticism\, and lead healthier lives.

DESCRIPTION:Karma is often associated with fate or predestination\, some sort of cosmic system of reward and punishment\, or to quote Taylor Swift\, ‘Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend.’ \nFrom the Buddhist point of view\, karma means action. As the Buddha said: \nWhat you are is what you have been\,\nWhat you will be is what you do now. \nJoin us for an evening with Tibetan Buddhist master\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, as he explores what karma really is\, the practical implications of an appreciation of karma for how we live our lives\, and how this can help us find inner peace\, good heartedness and humour in an uncertain busy modern world. \n  \n🗓️ 10 January 2025\n⏰ 7:00-9:00pm\n📍in person at the Richmond Theatrette & Online  \n  \n  \nAbout Ringu Tulku Rinpoche \nRingu Tulku Rinpoche is extremely knowledgeable and\, with his excellent command of the English language\, he is able to transmit the most complicated teachings in a remarkably accessible way\, infused with warmth and humour. \nRinpoche is a Tibetan Buddhist Master of the Kagyu Order. SUMMARY:Our Inner Freedom - Looking Within | Melbourne\, Sydney and Online
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha’s life and teachings show that we all encounter change and loss. Our lives are changing all the time\, often in small ways\, but sometimes impermanence turns our whole world upside down. If we can take the message of impermanence and death to heart fully we can discover the deathless nature of mind that is the doorway to genuine and lasting freedom. \nThe Buddha’s life and teachings show that we all encounter change and loss. Our lives are changing all the time\, often in small ways\, but sometimes impermanence turns our whole world upside down. Sometimes\, the experience of such a powerful reminder of impermanence can be frightening; and we feel an urgent need to question and challenge our life’s priorities. The deeper implications of impermanence—that everything is interdependent and selfless—can help us to let go of grasping and fixating on our circumstances as solid and real. As we deepen our reflection\, we may well emerge from self-destructive habits that may be causing us to be unhappy or dissatisfied. If we can take the message of impermanence and death to heart fully we can discover the deathless nature of mind that is the doorway to genuine and lasting freedom. \nThis year-long course consists of three modules. The first will present a series of contemplations and meditations on impermanence\, death\, selflessness and emptiness. This can assist us to move beyond the clutches of fear and discover a new meaning\, a new inspiration\, and a new joy in our lives. The second\, looks at how the Buddha’s own life embodies the deep truths he taught. And the third\, takes a deep dive into the elements of the Buddha’s teaching that distinguish Buddhism from all other religious and philosophical approaches. \nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Patrick Gaffney\, Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche and Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering each student the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment.\n\nDetails \nWhere: \n\nOnline\nRigpa Melbourne\, 803 Nicholson St\, Carlton North\nRigpa Sydney\, 158 Australia St\, Newtown.\n\nWhen: Thursday evenings\, starting 8 February\nTen weeks\, with a break during Easter. \nTime: 7.00pm – 9.00pm Australian Eastern Time\n(9.00am Central European Time; 3.00am US East Coast Time) \nThis course is for established students. SUMMARY:The Wisdom of Compassion: Inner Healing and Spiritual Strength | Melbourne\, Sydney and Online
DESCRIPTION:The Wisdom of Compassion presents key Buddhist teachings on the powerful logic of compassion and practical methods for developing a more kind relationship with ourselves\, those around us and ultimately all beings. \nParticipants in this course will learn how to: \n\ndevelop loving kindness for themselves\nextend that loving kindness to all beings\nmove along the path from compassion to fully enlightened courage\n\nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering each student the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment and to connect with a community of practitioners.

SUMMARY:Meditation and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Meditation & Beyond – An Urban Weekend Meditation Retreat with Dr Ian Gawler\n  \n\n\n\nJoin Rigpa Teacher\, Ian Gawler for two days of highly experiential teachings. Together\, we will explore two wonderful approaches… The Unifying Practice and Open Awareness meditation. \nWhether you are new to meditation\, or an old hand\, this weekend will guide you to a deeper\, more satisfying meditation experience. \nThe weekend will include plenty of time for discussion\, questions and answers\, and meditation practice. \nOnline or in person in Melbourne\, Sydney\, Newcastle \nA weekend for retreat\, a weekend for your self.\n\n\n\nSATURDAY – THE UNIFYING PRACTICE\n\n\nSUNDAY – AWARENESS MEDITATION\n\n\n\nAnyone who has begun meditating knows the mind is tricky. As we get to know it more\, we come to realise that rather than us using it as the wonderful tool that it is\, it often tends to use us! \nSo to tame this mind of ours\, to bring it under control\, to be able to use it to its best\, we need to train it. \nThis is the role of meditation. \nThe Unifying Practice is a unique combination of three core meditation techniques that are first learnt individually then brought together. A special technique developed by Sogyal Rinpoche\, it is simple to learn and has direct application for many needs – wellbeing\, stress management\, study\, work\, sport\, health and healing\, as well as providing a mainstay on the path to enlightenment. \nIan will introduce the theory\, share the techniques\, guide the practices. \n\n\n\n\nThe Unifying Practice is actually the ground of all practice\, and can be applied at all levels\, meditation\, ngöndro\, sadhana practice and dzogchen. Through this practice\, our ordinary body\, speech and mind are transformed into the enlightened body\, speech and mind of the Buddhas. As we practise the sequence of the three methods\, slowly our thoughts\, emotions and energy get transformed and meditation happens effortlessly. So\, through simply practicing the Unifying Practice\, we can gradually reach the innermost nature of mind. \n\n\n\n\n Sogyal Rinpoche \n\n\n\n\n\nPure awareness: “knowing”\, “clarity”\, or “luminosity”\, is one of three fundamental qualities of our mind\, along with love and wisdom. Awareness illuminates all we perceive and indeed\, it illuminates our own true nature. \nWhen in pure awareness\, we are fully in the present moment. We are able to fully engage with life – joyfully. Experiencing pure awareness is possible for everyone. It is always there. \nWe simply need to learn how to recognise it\, and then remain in it. \nWhile most meditation techniques focus upon a particular object\, Awareness Meditation is special; \n\nit is object-less. Also known as Shamatha Without Support\, this is almost like non-meditation;\nit takes us beyond technique to a more direct experience of who we really are.\n\nAwareness Meditation takes us to the very heart of meditation… \nAnd what we experience in our formal practice will translate directly into enhancing our everyday life. \nBased on profound teachings by Sogyal Rinpoche\, and building on the practices of the retreat’s first day\, Ian will share practice tips\, guide practice sessions and answer questions. \n\n\n\n\nWhen we try to control the mind or hold on to an experience\,\nWe do not see the innate perfection of the present moment.\nPure awareness is like space\, boundless and open.\nIt is always here.\nYou do not have to make it up.\nAll you have to do is rest in that. \n\n\n\n\nTulku Urgyen Rinpoche \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr Ian Gawler OAM\nDr Ian Gawler is a retired veterinarian\, long term cancer survivor and best-selling author who has taught widely on meditation for over 40 years. Ian has been a student of Sogyal Rinpoche since 1985 and from 2006 to 2013 trained in the study and practice of authentic Buddhist teachings on meditation\, mind\, compassion and wisdom via Rigpa’s Institute of Wisdom and Compassion. He has also received teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many other teachers from across all traditions. Ian is closely involved with the Inter-Faith movement. \nHis books include the ground-breaking You Can Conquer Cancer and Blue Sky Mind. \n \nHe co-founded the world’s first lifestyle-based self-help programs for both cancer and Multiple Sclerosis and worked at the Gawler Foundation as therapeutic director for nearly 30 years. More recently he has been involved in developing a therapeutic meditation app Allevi8\, and in establishing Centres for Contemplative Studies at the University of Melbourne and Monash University. SUMMARY:Mind in Comfort and Ease | An Easter meditation retreat with Dr Ian Gawler
DESCRIPTION:Online and in person in Sydney\, Melbourne\, Adelaide\, Brisbane and Newcastle\nWe invite you to spend this Easter bringing your mind home in the supportive company of a community of meditators\, to go deeply into the practice of shamatha (calm abiding or peacefully remaining) meditation.
