SUMMARY:Warm Heart\, Wise Mind: A deep dive into our own compassionate nature
DESCRIPTION:A new course offered by Rigpa Brisbane | Wednesday evenings | 7:00pm – 8:45pm \nFor 10 sessions at Rigpa Brisbane \nStarting 5 June 2024 \nWith Jan van der Breggen \n\nThis course explores the transformative power of compassion\, and how to respond to the challenges of our lives in an open hearted\, compassionate way. In the Buddhist tradition compassion is treasured as a powerful source of healing and inner strength\, and the key to building meaningful relationships. \nWe will take our life experiences as the starting point of our 10-week journey. They are the ‘raw materials’ for developing compassion. We will explore how opening our mind and heart to our own and others’ experiences of happiness and suffering helps us connect with our innate capacity for empathy.  Compassion\, then\, arises when we take this natural capacity for empathy—that love and affection we all feel for one another— and combine it with wisdom. The basis of this wisdom is a deep understanding of suffering and its causes\, and a realisation that our own happiness and the happiness of others are deeply connected and dependent on each other. \nThe course will draw on a variety of sources\, ranging from insights of contemporary science and philosophy to the direct teachings of Buddha recorded in ancient texts called sutra and abhidharma\, to contemporary masters who hold the living and unbroken transmission of the Buddha’s wisdom mind and are able to guide us from the depth of their insight and compassion. \n  \n \nAbout Jan van der Breggen \nJan has studied and practised the Dharma since the mid-1990s\, learning from many great masters\, but principally from Sogyal Rinpoche and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. From 2006 to 2009\, he participated in a three-year meditation retreat in France. \nIn 2022\, Jan was entrusted by Khenchen Namdrol Rinpoche and Mindrolling Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche as one of the twenty-five\, worldwide Rigpa Senior Teachers. In 2017 he was selected to be a participant of the Milinda program\, a 10-year\, international Buddhist teacher training program under the guidance of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. \nJan grew up in the Netherlands where he earnt his masters degree in Historical Anthropology. He is fluent in English and Dutch\, and lives in Brisbane where he works as a data analytics professional whilst being involved in the Rigpa Brisbane and National Centre as a dharma teacher. \n  \nThis course is suitable for:  Beginners and experienced students alike \nWhen: 10 weekly classes\, Wednesday 5 June to 7 August 2024\, 7 to 8.45pm AEST \nWhere: In person at Rigpa Brisbane\, 19 Enoggera Tce\, Red Hill (online attendance only available if you do not live in Brisbane) \nCost: $200 full fee or $110 concession \nFor Rigpa subscribers: The course is included in your subscription fees (registration is still required\, just close the payment page that comes up after registration.)

SUMMARY:Liberation: Is it possible in this life?
DESCRIPTION:No matter who we are\, we all share the same wish to be happy and free from suffering. But when we are immersed in the responsibilities of this life and in all our frenetic daily activity\, it may seem impossible to achieve liberation\, that is only for special beings. But nothing could be further from the truth: when we realize the suffering caused by our way of living in samsara\, a desire arises within us to be free from it\, and the practice of the dharma offers us the possibility of liberation in this life. \n\nThis session is part of our Monthly Sangha Gathering series presenting highlights from: The Way of the Great Perfection \, a new cycle of the All-Encompassing Path to Enlightenment

SUMMARY:Loneliness: The Solution Within
DESCRIPTION:All of us\, at some stage of our life\, experience loneliness one way or another. Loneliness does not discriminate\, people across all genders and ages experience it — both wealthy and poor. So often in seeking for an answer to this we look for comfort outside of ourselves – we endlessly distract ourselves away from the core of our problems. The Buddhist teachings take a different approach. They remind us that ultimately the solution lies within ourselves. Through working with our mind and heart\, loneliness can be softened\, transformed and ultimately completely overcome. \nSaturday’s Loneliness: The Solution Within session is part of our monthly program: Finding Peace and Joy in Troubled Times. This series of Saturday afternoon sessions offer an introduction to meditation and practical advice from some of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist teachers of our age. \nApplying these teachings can help us meet the challenges of these difficult times\, to heal ourselves\, and to bring us to the core of our own peace\, compassion and wisdom.

SUMMARY:The wealth of our innate wakefulness
DESCRIPTION:A weekend teaching on buddha nature\nWith Jan van der Breggen \nOut of all of Buddha’s teachings\, those on buddha nature communicate most directly what lies at their heart: that we are fundamentally good\, and our essential nature\, our identity\, is the same profound\, peaceful\, stainless\, lucid\, and unconditioned essence that Buddha himself discovered as a result of following the spiritual path. \nConfidence in buddha nature is deeply transformative in terms of our outlook on life; the way we view ourselves\, the world around us\, our values and priorities in life\, our relationship to our spiritual path: all this is touched by the teachings on buddha nature. \nThis weekend teaching will bring together classic Indian and Tibetan Buddhist teachings on buddha nature\, and contemporary teachings by Sogyal Rinpoche\, which will give us the opportunity to discover our own buddha nature\, and give expression to it in our thoughts and actions. \nWe will work together on building confidence in our buddha nature through the practice of contemplation — which will enable us to see their relevance to our own lives and experience — and more experientially\, through the practice of meditation: learning to let go and relax in the clarity and awareness of our mind which is available to us all the time. \nTogether we will reflect on questions like: \n\nWhat are we looking for in life? And why?\nWho are we really? If our thoughts\, emotions\, our body\, and our world are alwayschanging\, is there something in us that is really ‘us’\, which is constant and unchanging?\nWhat is mind?\nHow can I know I have buddha nature?\nIf my mind’s nature is buddha nature\, why am I suffering?\nHow to overcome fear?\nHow do we habitually relate to ourselves and others? And why?\nWhat is wisdom? And what is compassion?\nHow can I come to fully actualise my buddha nature?\n\n  \nAbout Jan van der Breggen \nJan began his path of meditation at 17 years old\, touched by the tenderness of the human experience and filled with questions about what reality was all about. Thirty years later\, Jan continues to be moved by the vast profundity of the Buddhist path and its vision of the inherent wisdom\, loving kindness and strength that lies in the minds of each and every one of us. \nJan completed Rigpa’s three-year retreat\, is a Senior teacher\, and\, in 2017\, he was selected to participate in the Milinda program\, a 10-year\, international Buddhist teacher training program under the guidance of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. \nJan grew up in the Netherlands and has lived in Brisbane\, Australia\, since 1998\, where he obtained a postgraduate degree in information technology. He makes a living as a data and analytics professional for a large financial service provider. Jan was instrumental in founding Rigpa Brisbane in 1999\, where he has served as a Dharma instructor for over 20 years. \n  \nThis retreat is suitable for:  Beginners and experienced meditators alike \nWhen:   Saturday 8 – Sunday 9 June 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM each day \nLocation: \nRigpa’s National Centre\, 158 Australia St\, Newtown\, NSW and Online via Zoom

SUMMARY:How We Can Work with Anger
DESCRIPTION:Harming others out of anger brings suffering\, both to ourselves and others. Yet\, so often\, we don’t think of the consequences and instead find ourselves provoked and reacting impulsively\, only to regret it later. On the other hand\, if we just try to block or suppress anger when it arises\, it is very difficult to manage. So what can we do to deal with anger when it arises\, as it inevitably will? \nThe Buddhist teachings offer a rich toolkit to help us short circuit\, pacify\, and transform our anger. Join us for an afternoon investigating how we can apply those tools each and every day. \nSaturday’s Why Do We Suffer? session is part of our monthly program: Finding Peace and Joy in Troubled Times.

SUMMARY:Turning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment | Online
DESCRIPTION:The Buddhist teachings show us a way to find a deep sense of fulfillment that does not depend on outer circumstances and is naturally ours. Through a process of reflection and meditation\, we find inner strength\, which allows us to fully and fearlessly engage with everything we experience in our lives. Then\, all our experiences – happy or sad\, good or bad – will become a source of personal growth and spiritual awakening: they have the potential to open our eyes and our heart\, and make us grow wiser and more compassionate. \nTurning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment will present teachings that offer commentary of the classic\, short and pithy text\, Taking Happiness and Suffering on our Path\, by the great Dzogchen master Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima. This text presents the Buddha’s teachings on how to transform suffering and happiness in a manner that is easy to understand and put into practice.

SUMMARY:The Wisdom of Compassion: Inner Healing and Spiritual Strength | Melbourne\, Sydney and Online
DESCRIPTION:The Wisdom of Compassion presents key Buddhist teachings on the powerful logic of compassion and practical methods for developing a more kind relationship with ourselves\, those around us and ultimately all beings.  \nOur innate capacity for empathy is the source of the very best of human qualities: love\, kindness\, generosity\, warm-heartedness\, courage … compassion. Although we are born with a vast capacity to love\, we may not know how to do so unconditionally\, or how to express that love in practice. \nWhen our heart and mind are filled with love\, we find the greatest inner healing\, tranquillity and well-being. Modern research shows that with empathy and compassion we can be more fully ourselves\, connect more easily with others\, improve self worth and reduce self-criticism\, and lead healthier lives. \nParticipants in this course will learn how to: \n\ndevelop loving kindness for themselves\nextend that loving kindness to all beings\nmove along the path from compassion to fully enlightened courage\n\nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering each student the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment and to connect with a community of practitioners.

SUMMARY:Meditation and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Meditation & Beyond – An Urban Weekend Meditation Retreat with Dr Ian Gawler\n  \n\n\n\nJoin Rigpa Teacher\, Ian Gawler for two days of highly experiential teachings. Together\, we will explore two wonderful approaches… The Unifying Practice and Open Awareness meditation. \nWhether you are new to meditation\, or an old hand\, this weekend will guide you to a deeper\, more satisfying meditation experience. \nThe weekend will include plenty of time for discussion\, questions and answers\, and meditation practice. \nOnline or in person in Melbourne\, Sydney\, Newcastle \nA weekend for retreat\, a weekend for your self.\n\n\n\nSATURDAY – THE UNIFYING PRACTICE\n\n\nSUNDAY – AWARENESS MEDITATION\n\n\n\nAnyone who has begun meditating knows the mind is tricky. As we get to know it more\, we come to realise that rather than us using it as the wonderful tool that it is\, it often tends to use us! \nSo to tame this mind of ours\, to bring it under control\, to be able to use it to its best\, we need to train it. \nThis is the role of meditation. \nThe Unifying Practice is a unique combination of three core meditation techniques that are first learnt individually then brought together. A special technique developed by Sogyal Rinpoche\, it is simple to learn and has direct application for many needs – wellbeing\, stress management\, study\, work\, sport\, health and healing\, as well as providing a mainstay on the path to enlightenment. \nIan will introduce the theory\, share the techniques\, guide the practices. \n\n\n\n\nThe Unifying Practice is actually the ground of all practice\, and can be applied at all levels\, meditation\, ngöndro\, sadhana practice and dzogchen. Through this practice\, our ordinary body\, speech and mind are transformed into the enlightened body\, speech and mind of the Buddhas. As we practise the sequence of the three methods\, slowly our thoughts\, emotions and energy get transformed and meditation happens effortlessly. So\, through simply practicing the Unifying Practice\, we can gradually reach the innermost nature of mind. \n\n\n\n\n Sogyal Rinpoche \n\n\n\n\n\nPure awareness: “knowing”\, “clarity”\, or “luminosity”\, is one of three fundamental qualities of our mind\, along with love and wisdom. Awareness illuminates all we perceive and indeed\, it illuminates our own true nature. \nWhen in pure awareness\, we are fully in the present moment. We are able to fully engage with life – joyfully. Experiencing pure awareness is possible for everyone. It is always there. \nWe simply need to learn how to recognise it\, and then remain in it. \nWhile most meditation techniques focus upon a particular object\, Awareness Meditation is special; \n\nit is object-less. Also known as Shamatha Without Support\, this is almost like non-meditation;\nit takes us beyond technique to a more direct experience of who we really are.\n\nAwareness Meditation takes us to the very heart of meditation… \nAnd what we experience in our formal practice will translate directly into enhancing our everyday life. \nBased on profound teachings by Sogyal Rinpoche\, and building on the practices of the retreat’s first day\, Ian will share practice tips\, guide practice sessions and answer questions. \n\n\n\n\nWhen we try to control the mind or hold on to an experience\,\nWe do not see the innate perfection of the present moment.\nPure awareness is like space\, boundless and open.\nIt is always here.\nYou do not have to make it up.\nAll you have to do is rest in that. \n\n\n\n\nTulku Urgyen Rinpoche \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr Ian Gawler OAM\nDr Ian Gawler is a retired veterinarian\, long term cancer survivor and best-selling author who has taught widely on meditation for over 40 years. Ian has been a student of Sogyal Rinpoche since 1985 and from 2006 to 2013 trained in the study and practice of authentic Buddhist teachings on meditation\, mind\, compassion and wisdom via Rigpa’s Institute of Wisdom and Compassion. SUMMARY:Sydney Book Group
DESCRIPTION:Sydney Book Group \nWe warmly invite you to our monthly book group. We will be meeting on the third Tuesday of each month\, 10.30am – 12.30pm\, starting 15 August. Please join us upstairs at 158 Australia St\, Newtown. \nThis book group will be exploring end-of-life themes\, as presented in Tibetan Buddhism. \nOur first book will be Facing Death and Finding Hope by Christine Longaker. \nMany books have been written on the subject of death and dying over the last twenty-five years\, yet none provides a comprehensive spiritual paradigm combined with practical guidance for resounding effectively and compassionately to be most common difficulties and challenges of the dying. Christine’s Longaker’s uncompromising and uplifting book does it all\, and is based on her own personal experiences\, her study and work with Sogyal Rinpoche and on the workshops she now holds all over Europe and the USA. \n“Life’s final phase is too important to be left to chance.  Wise guides are arising in our culture who can teach us about this crowning event. Christine Longaker brings deep wisdom to this task\, and her views span all religious traditions.  This is a fine\, gentle\, and deeply compassionate work.  Highly recommended.” \n— Dr. Larry Dossey\, author of Prayer is Good Medicine \nEach session will include: \n\nmeditation practice\ntime to check-in with each other\nan overview of our selected reading\nopen discussion and information sharing\n\nPlease email Rigpa Sydney sydney@rigpa.org.au to let us know if you’re coming.
