SUMMARY:How We Can Work with Anger
DESCRIPTION:Harming others out of anger brings suffering\, both to ourselves and others. Yet\, so often\, we don’t think of the consequences and instead find ourselves provoked and reacting impulsively\, only to regret it later. On the other hand\, if we just try to block or suppress anger when it arises\, it is very difficult to manage. So what can we do to deal with anger when it arises\, as it inevitably will? \nThe Buddhist teachings offer a rich toolkit to help us short circuit\, pacify\, and transform our anger. Join us for an afternoon investigating how we can apply those tools each and every day. \nSaturday’s Why Do We Suffer? session is part of our monthly program: Finding Peace and Joy in Troubled Times. This series of Saturday afternoon sessions offer an introduction to meditation and practical advice from some of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist teachers of our age. \nApplying these teachings can help us meet the challenges of these difficult times\, to heal ourselves\, and to bring us to the core of our own peace\, compassion and wisdom.

SUMMARY:Inspiring a Revolution in your Heart and Mind / Term 2 / Newcastle
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we take you an experiential journey through The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Discover a deep and universal wisdom explored in the major themes of the book\, and learn about their practical implications for living well. Suitable for people of any religion or of none\, this course encourages you to reflect on the Buddhist teachings\, to see what makes sense to you and to experiment with applying these teachings in your daily life. \nThe Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is widely regarded as one of the most complete and authoritative presentations of Tibetan Buddhism. A manual for life and death and a source of sacred inspiration from the heart of the Tibetan tradition\, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying provides a lucid and inspiring introduction to the practice of meditation\, to the nature of mind\, to karma and rebirth\, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path. The teachings\, meditation and contemplations from this authentic tradition reveal how each of us can live a more meaningful\, connected and fulfilling life. \nIn term two we explore the power of our mind as the universal ordering principle: it is the creator of suffering and the creator of happiness. We investigate two aspects of the mind: \n\nthe appearance of mind – our thoughts\, emotions\, all the stories\, the ordinary mind and\nthe essence of mind – which is clear\, cognizant and has unconfined capacity.\n\nWe will also look at how to make our meditation practice truly meaningful. This term we will also explore the Buddhist reasoning for the acceptance of rebirth and reincarnation. We will use the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths as a framework to help us take stock of our lives\, inspire a shift in the way we see ourselves and the way we relate to the world around us. Lastly\, we investigate Karma. Karma is often misunderstood as fate or pre-destination. Karma\, however if understood well\, presents us with an opportunity to be free from our suffering. \nOver the course of the year you will learn: \n\nHow an acceptance of impermanence can help us understand death and change our attitude towards life\nHow meditation can transform our perception\, increase our confidence and fully connect us to the world around us\nThat mind is much more than just thoughts and emotions\nHow understanding the interdependency of all things and the principle of karma (that every action has an effect) gives us a logical basis for ethics and personal responsibility.\n\nLed by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience\, each session consists of: \n\nVideo teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche\, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche\, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche\, Mingyur Rinpoche\, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg.\nMeditation practice\nTime for contemplation\nGroup discussions and Q&A\, offering you the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment.\n\nDetails for Term 2\nThis is the second term of a year long course that can be joined at any time.\nIf you wish to join after the commencement of each term and the registration is closed\, then please email us at newcastle@rigpa.org.au. It is possible to join and pay a pro rata amount. \nWhere: In person at Infuse Health\, 4/10 William Street\, Adamstown 2289. \nWhen: Tuesday Mornings for Ten weeks\, 30 April to 2 July. \nTime: 11:15am to 1:15pm Australian Eastern Time \nCost: Full $200\, Concession (concession card holders and Infuse Health members) $100 \nFREE for Rigpa members/subscribers. SUMMARY:Warm Heart\, Wise Mind: A deep dive into our own compassionate nature
DESCRIPTION:A new course offered by Rigpa Brisbane | Wednesday evenings | 7:00pm – 8:45pm \nFor 10 sessions at Rigpa Brisbane \nStarting 5 June 2024 \nWith Jan van der Breggen \n\nThis course explores the transformative power of compassion\, and how to respond to the challenges of our lives in an open hearted\, compassionate way. In the Buddhist tradition compassion is treasured as a powerful source of healing and inner strength\, and the key to building meaningful relationships. \nWe will take our life experiences as the starting point of our 10-week journey. They are the ‘raw materials’ for developing compassion. We will explore how opening our mind and heart to our own and others’ experiences of happiness and suffering helps us connect with our innate capacity for empathy.  Compassion\, then\, arises when we take this natural capacity for empathy—that love and affection we all feel for one another— and combine it with wisdom. The basis of this wisdom is a deep understanding of suffering and its causes\, and a realisation that our own happiness and the happiness of others are deeply connected and dependent on each other. \nThe course will draw on a variety of sources\, ranging from insights of contemporary science and philosophy to the direct teachings of Buddha recorded in ancient texts called sutra and abhidharma\, to contemporary masters who hold the living and unbroken transmission of the Buddha’s wisdom mind and are able to guide us from the depth of their insight and compassion. \n  \n \nAbout Jan van der Breggen \nJan has studied and practised the Dharma since the mid-1990s\, learning from many great masters\, but principally from Sogyal Rinpoche and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. From 2006 to 2009\, he participated in a three-year meditation retreat in France. \nIn 2022\, Jan was entrusted by Khenchen Namdrol Rinpoche and Mindrolling Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche as one of the twenty-five\, worldwide Rigpa Senior Teachers. In 2017 he was selected to be a participant of the Milinda program\, a 10-year\, international Buddhist teacher training program under the guidance of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. \nJan grew up in the Netherlands where he earnt his masters degree in Historical Anthropology. He is fluent in English and Dutch\, and lives in Brisbane where he works as a data analytics professional whilst being involved in the Rigpa Brisbane and National Centre as a dharma teacher. \n  \nThis course is suitable for:  Beginners and experienced students alike \nWhen: 10 weekly classes\, Wednesday 5 June to 7 August 2024\, 7 to 8.45pm AEST \nWhere: In person at Rigpa Brisbane\, 19 Enoggera Tce\, Red Hill (online attendance only available if you do not live in Brisbane) \nCost: $200 full fee or $110 concession \nFor Rigpa subscribers: The course is included in your subscription fees (registration is still required\, just close the payment page that comes up after registration.)

SUMMARY:Turning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment/Online
DESCRIPTION:The Buddhist teachings show us a way to find a deep sense of fulfillment that does not depend on outer circumstances and is naturally ours. Through a process of reflection and meditation\, we find inner strength\, which allows us to fully and fearlessly engage with everything we experience in our lives. Then\, all our experiences – happy or sad\, good or bad – will become a source of personal growth and spiritual awakening: they have the potential to open our eyes and our heart\, and make us grow wiser and more compassionate. \nTurning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment will present teachings that offer commentary of the classic\, short and pithy text\, Taking Happiness and Suffering on our Path\, by the great Dzogchen master Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima. This text presents the Buddha’s teachings on how to transform suffering and happiness in a manner that is easy to understand and put into practice. \nDetails for Term 2 \nWhere: Online \nWhen: Friday mornings\, for ten weeks\, 3 May to 5 July \nTime: 9.30am – 11:30 am\, Australian Eastern Time \n(Thursday 11.30pm Central European Time; Thursday 5.30pm US East Coast Time) \nThis is the second term of a year-long course. SUMMARY:The wealth of our innate wakefulness
DESCRIPTION:A weekend teaching on buddha nature\nWith Jan van der Breggen \nOut of all of Buddha’s teachings\, those on buddha nature communicate most directly what lies at their heart: that we are fundamentally good\, and our essential nature\, our identity\, is the same profound\, peaceful\, stainless\, lucid\, and unconditioned essence that Buddha himself discovered as a result of following the spiritual path. \nConfidence in buddha nature is deeply transformative in terms of our outlook on life; the way we view ourselves\, the world around us\, our values and priorities in life\, our relationship to our spiritual path: all this is touched by the teachings on buddha nature. \nThis weekend teaching will bring together classic Indian and Tibetan Buddhist teachings on buddha nature\, and contemporary teachings by Sogyal Rinpoche\, which will give us the opportunity to discover our own buddha nature\, and give expression to it in our thoughts and actions. \nWe will work together on building confidence in our buddha nature through the practice of contemplation — which will enable us to see their relevance to our own lives and experience — and more experientially\, through the practice of meditation: learning to let go and relax in the clarity and awareness of our mind which is available to us all the time. \nTogether we will reflect on questions like: \n\nWhat are we looking for in life? And why?\nWho are we really? If our thoughts\, emotions\, our body\, and our world are alwayschanging\, is there something in us that is really ‘us’\, which is constant and unchanging?\nWhat is mind?\nHow can I know I have buddha nature?\nIf my mind’s nature is buddha nature\, why am I suffering?\nHow to overcome fear?\nHow do we habitually relate to ourselves and others? And why?\nWhat is wisdom? And what is compassion?\nHow can I come to fully actualise my buddha nature?\n\n  \nAbout Jan van der Breggen \nJan began his path of meditation at 17 years old\, touched by the tenderness of the human experience and filled with questions about what reality was all about.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Compassion: A Practical Guide to Being Kind | Online
DESCRIPTION:In a world full of turmoil\, stress\, anxiety and disconnect\, we are all looking for simple\, practical ways in which we can nurture our own inner goodness and find the peace and courage to live well. \nGeshe Chekawa’s summation of the Tibetan Buddhist guidelines for living a compassionate life\, known as the Seven Points of Mind Training\, have guided practitioners for more than a thousand years. His pithy slogans open the way for each of us to nurture our own compassionate nature and put compassion into action in everyday life. These slogans offer a vital practical antidote to despair and despondency. \nCultivating Compassion presents teachings on the Seven Points given by Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche accompanied by reflections from Traleg Rinpoche. \nJetsün Khandro Rinpoche is one of the outstanding meditation teachers of our time. She is known for her penetrating wisdom and humour\, conveying the Buddhist teachings in a concise and lively manner\, enriched with personal anecdotes\, which are of particular relevance to the everyday life of the modern\, fast-paced world. \nFrom the early 1980s onwards\, Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche was a pioneer in bringing Tibetan Buddhism to Australia and was a strong advocate of non-sectarianism. He taught extensively on many aspects of Buddhist psychology and philosophy\, comparative religion\, and Buddhist and Western thought. \nThis program is open to all\, but does assume some familiarity with meditation and the Buddhist understanding of interdependence.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Book Group
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss Thomas K. Shor’s book A Step Away from Paradise in the Book Group. \nThis book tells the true story from a far-off corner of the Himalayas\, long fabled in Tibetan tradition to be hiding among its peaks and glaciers a valley of immortality – a real-life Shangri-La. \nThey had been waiting generations for the prophesied lama to come\, the one with the secret visionary knowledge of how to ‘open’ the Hidden Land. \nThen\, one day\, he came. It was the early 1960s. His name was Tulshuk Lingpa. This book tells the story of this charismatic visionary lama and his remarkable expedition. \nJust imagine… What would have happened if Lewis Carroll had proclaimed the reality of Alice’s Wonderland? What if he had gathered a following & launched an expedition? \nIt is a wonderful opportunity to share insights and reflections with like-minded Dharma friends. \nA small plate of food to share and a donation to our Centre is most appreciated. \nAll are welcome. \nPre-booking is not required. \nEnquiries: Contact Liz at brisbane@rigpa.org.au
